Why?

We have been looking for a new car and it is rather disturbing to find quite a few on the lots with satellite radio already installed. I told the guy that I did not want satellite radio and how could I get a car without it. He asked what I wanted and I told him I wanted a radio with CD player and a cassette tape player. He said that was old technology. I left the lot.

I wonder if the dealers are getting paid to have new cars ordered with satellite radio by Sirius or XM sort of like AOL paying computer companies to install AOL on new computers. If so, then the FTC should shut down the whole operation. Enough is enough.

Welcome to what most folks like to call the 21st century.

Tapes are all but dead and used mostly for data storage. It's all becoming digital. The last vehicle I bought that had a tape deck was a 2004 Dodge Ram and I had to get the Infinity Sound package to get it.

Cd's are the norm much like tapes in the 80's and 90's. Ipods and other digital media players are becoming prevalent. Hell my Fusions radio plays mp3's.

If they sell the car with satellite radio , they get a cut of the cash. They get paid for the equipment install , then they get a % of every sub they bring in until they stop service.

Don't like satellite ? Argue with the dealer rep and tell em you don't want to pay for it if you won't use it. They will either pull the tuner or in the case of many top end dealers flash the entertainment module and remove the functionality.

Simple.

Your post makes no sense. That's like saying you don't want a car because it has cruise control installed. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it. It's nice for those of us that keep up with technology. XM and Sirius both have deals with various auto manufacturers and the Sat Radio is installed at the factory. They could take the route that Scion took. In my tC - it comes from the factory with a head unit that supports both services and you can have either one installed at the dealership if you wish.

On a side note - if I was the dealer and you asked for a new car with a cassette player in it - I would have told you the exact same thing.

OK, I'll bite. What disturbs you about this?

I told the guy that I did not want satellite radio and how could I get a car without it. He asked what I wanted and I told him I wanted a radio with CD player and a cassette tape player. He said that was old technology. I left the lot.
Wow, you really showed him, didn't you?

I'll take that to mean that you didn't bother to wait for an answer to your question. For those who care, the answer can be summed up in one word: "aftermarket".

I wonder if the dealers are getting paid to have new cars ordered with satellite radio by Sirius or XM sort of like AOL paying computer companies to install AOL on new computers. If so, then the FTC should shut down the whole operation. Enough is enough.
What "whole operation"? And why? "FTC" stands for "Federal Trade Commission", which kind of implies that they're not in the 'restraint of trade' business...

Re: Why?

This is the 21th century and I should have a choice as to what I want or don't want based on need. The cassette tape option is based on having quite a few tapes of records that are not available on CD. Seems like a reasonable request to me.

As far as the satellite radio and it's installation in new cars, I would not sign up for the service so why should I have to pay for the equipment. This is the 21th century and I should have a choice.

If I am being forced to buy something I do not want, I consider this something the FTC should investigate. I don't consider satellite radio to be a safety feature.

I would add one more option on the radio for the new car and that would be a MP3 connection so that I can plug my 8830 into it or one of the kids iPods. Afterall, I would like to use the useful technology of the 21th century.

First of all, what does "this is the 21th [sic] century" have to do with the rest? Second, your opinion of what should be is just that--an opinion, nothing more. And nobody needs a cassette and/or CD player in their car. In fact, nobody needs a car. They're nice to have, but not necessary to sustain life.

The cassette tape option is based on having quite a few tapes of records that are not available on CD. Seems like a reasonable request to me.
What request? You made, a statement, not a request.

As far as the satellite radio and it's installation in new cars, I would not sign up for the service so why should I have to pay for the equipment.
You don't have to pay for the equipment.

This is the 21th century and I should have a choice.
Again, what does one have to do with the other? Unless someone is holding a gun to your head, you had the choice to post here, and what to post. So it seems that you do in fact have choices. What's your point?

If I am being forced to buy something I do not want, I consider this something the FTC should investigate.
Actually that's a matter for the local police. But so far I see nothing for you to complain about. If you failed to mention that the salesperson mugged you, and then gave you a satellite radio before you "left the lot", then you should have dialed 911 right away. Since you haven't mentioned being the victim of a forceful crime, I must conclude that you're speaking of the hypothetical.

I don't consider satellite radio to be a safety feature.
Neither do I. But that's getting O/T.

I would add one more option on the radio for the new car and that would be a MP3 connection so that I can plug my 8830 into it or one of the kids iPods. Afterall [sic], I would like to use the useful technology of the 21th [sic] century.
Then you might consider using the useful technology from the 19th century (or "19st" of you prefer) called a telephone directory. They're available in 20th century format on the Internet as "yellow pages". There you can find a car stereo installer who can fulfill your desire.

Then don't buy off the lot. Sit down, order your car EXACTLY the way you want it, and wait for them to build it. This isn't rocket science there skippy.
