Was watching a re-run of Everyone Loves Raymond on TBS today... because here was nothing else on and I needed background noise.
As many know, TV stations are starting to put "Advertisements" at the bottoms of the shows, to advertise products or other items. TBS has been one of the worse with added sound to the ads, or taking up 2/3 of the screen.
I was angry with them... but... they have gone to far.
TODAY... they started doing a "fly by" Ad at the bottom when the Actor for the show walked in with it.. hit a spot on the screen and the show "Paused" mid-joke.
(Halloween episode right where Raymond finds out his condom is a piece of chocolate).
THEY PAUSED THE SHOW AT THE PUNCHLINE. Advertised their crap-ass made for the station show... then "Went back to the show" for another 10 seconds so the Joke could finish before going to regular commercials.
Oh I am so pissed.
...... will I stop watching TBS... I'll try.

clubs: | I'm not fond of TBS either. I rarely check that channel now to watch anything. Maybe on the weekend if there is a movie I haven't seen in ages. Usually overplayed too.

| I haven't watched TBS in years because of the commercials. It isn't a "protest" thing - it's simply that my nerves can't take it. The last time was trying to watch a movie they were running, and it just wasn't possible. By the time 10 minutes of commercials were done you'd lost interest. CNN -- another Turner station -- probably isn't as bad but still annoying. Of course PVR's make it a little bit easier but that takes planning, and the interruptions are still annoying.
Come to think of it I don't watch a lot of normal commercial channels much at all, especially since I switched over to HD -- mostly Discovery, PBS, National Geographic, and sometimes CBC.

| The amount of self promotion on TBS is beyond absurd. At the start and end of every commercial segment, you see an ad for their weeknight comedy lineup, or Sex and the City, or whatever movie they are going to play 6 times the upcoming weekend, or the new TBS exclusive series, etc etc.
I love their lineup and alot of the movies they run, but I'm constantly flipping to avoid watching their commercials. TVtropolis is just as bad... 'Hit TV lives here'. | |

| All those shows are horrible. They try so hard to get people to watch them too. I was watching Raymond the other night and that stupid Bill Engvall guy kept popping up and freezing the show so he could advertise about his show. He popped up and froze the current show like 8 times, then after he says "Back to Everybody Loves Raymond" they show about 2 seconds of it and it goes to regular commercial.

| That same pausing shit happened once when I was watching a week or so ago and I simply said "WTF IS THIS...". TBS is losing it. Their commercials are WAY to freaking long and annoying. Morons.

| I stopped watching tv altogether ages ago. At this point, why? The internet is a thousand times more entertaining and I have adblock on it. Between computer games, the web, and various things I download there's just no point to tv anymore. Everything it does the internet does better.

| As more are more people use devices such as TIVO or DVR you'll start seeing more and more of this stuff happening. They are evening discussing ways to play static images while people are fast forwarding through commercials just to get advertisements out. The in-show pausing and other things are was to still bombard us commercial skippers with these lame advertisements. | |

| I agree completely. While I am mostly pissed about the TBS decision to almost entirely cut Braves broadcasts and replace it with 300 episodes of Everyone Loves Raymond and that Tyler Perry show, this is really crappy too.
I remember the halcyon days of TBS in the early to mid 90's, where they just showed awesome movies like Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark and the like all the time, along with every Braves game. Better days, | |

I agree with all of this and would just like to add that it's one thing to complain about it here on the forum, but I hope all of you are emailing TBS directly (and the other networks who do this to extremes) and let them know how you feel. If you can get the email addresses for anyone in management, that would probably get more attention than a feedback form, but anything is better than nothing.
No wonder everyone has Attention Deficit Disorder. The damn networks won't LET you focus on any one thing at a time! They probably get a cut from the pharmaceutical companies from all the ADD medications that are sold. | |

| As far as I am concerned, TBS is unwatchable. There is no network out there which has as many commercials. Movies broadcast on it are all edited, sliced and diced, and not always to remove "questionable" content. They edit movies to simply add more commercials, taking out entire scenes. It is really a horrible station.

| They are doing this (the pause the show to advertise) to try to combat the tivo effect.
People with PVR's just zip through the commercials and they think this will work.
Personally, I think it will just make more people mad than anything and TBS will end up losing viewers. | |

| I read an article a while back that said that TV channels were looking for new ways to advertise now that half the population has a DVR, and this was one of them. Apparently nobody wants to sponsor shows/channels anymore because everyone at home fast forwards through the commercials, thus taking away all the channel's revenue. Kinda sucks when you think about it. Of course, this doesn't apply to self-promotion, which is what you are addressing.

1 edit | There are two versions of TBS here in the US. There is the TBS national feed for US cable companies. This is the feed that will be switching to HD in September. Then, there is the local WTBS feed in Atlanta. This station is carried by cable companies in Atlanta and most of Canada. In September, WTBS will be changing to Peachtree TV and will carry the Braves games. I assume Canada will receive both feeds. It will also include Warner movies and Braves games broadcasted in HD. It will not have local news and only the minimal local programming required by the FCC. | |

| I don't watch tv anymore in about 4 years. Honestly it was hard the first week. Several friends have followed. None of us regret it. There's so many interesting things to do. Without TV you'll have the time do do it.

| I've always hated TBS, they ruin movies like no other, and good movies at that. for example: you know in Austin Powers when he says "Do I make you horny baby?!?" they replaced Horny with Corny, and don't even get me started on the cuts, I can't remember what movie it was (but it was a "graphic" one) the movie's running time was the usual 1H 1/2 or what have you, and they cut it to like a half an hour, WHY EVEN AIR GOOD MOVIES IF YOUR GONNA SUBSTITUTE EVERY SECOND WORD AND CUT IT MORE THEN AN EMO WITH SOMETHING TO CRY ABOUT!!!!!! | |
