They are doing this (the pause the show to advertise) to try to combat the tivo effect.
People with PVR's just zip through the commercials and they think this will work.
Personally, I think it will just make more people mad than anything and TBS will end up losing viewers. |

| reply to Devanchya I read an article a while back that said that TV channels were looking for new ways to advertise now that half the population has a DVR, and this was one of them. Apparently nobody wants to sponsor shows/channels anymore because everyone at home fast forwards through the commercials, thus taking away all the channel's revenue. Kinda sucks when you think about it. Of course, this doesn't apply to self-promotion, which is what you are addressing. Not trying to justify that what they're doing is cool, at all. I hate advertisements just as much as the next person. |

1 edit | reply to Devanchya There are two versions of TBS here in the US. There is the TBS national feed for US cable companies. This is the feed that will be switching to HD in September. Then, there is the local WTBS feed in Atlanta. This station is carried by cable companies in Atlanta and most of Canada. In September, WTBS will be changing to Peachtree TV and will carry the Braves games. I assume Canada will receive both feeds. Here is a discussion about it: »www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php···3.0.html |

| reply to Devanchya I don't watch tv anymore in about 4 years. Honestly it was hard the first week. Several friends have followed. None of us regret it. There's so many interesting things to do. Without TV you'll have the time do do it.
I spend about 2 hours a day on the Internet. I see want I want, when I want. Freedom. I go the cinema once a week, beacuse I love movies. |

| reply to Shaft I agree with all of this and would just like to add that it's one thing to complain about it here on the forum, but I hope all of you are emailing TBS directly (and the other networks who do this to extremes) and let them know how you feel. If you can get the email addresses for anyone in management, that would probably get more attention than a feedback form, but anything is better than nothing.
No wonder everyone has Attention Deficit Disorder. The damn networks won't LET you focus on any one thing at a time! They probably get a cut from the pharmaceutical companies from all the ADD medications that are sold. |

| reply to Devanchya I've always hated TBS, they ruin movies like no other, and good movies at that. for example: you know in Austin Powers when he says "Do I make you horny baby?!?" they replaced Horny with Corny, and don't even get me started on the cuts, I can't remember what movie it was (but it was a "graphic" one) the movie's running time was the usual 1H 1/2 or what have you, and they cut it to like a half an hour, WHY EVEN AIR GOOD MOVIES IF YOUR GONNA SUBSTITUTE EVERY SECOND WORD AND CUT IT MORE THEN AN EMO WITH SOMETHING TO CRY ABOUT!!!!!! |

| reply to Devanchya I have BeyondTV running on my server and it records various shows - Everybody Loves Raymond being one of them. I went and checked this out and it is indeed there and big. I do have to say one thing though: it is at the end, it isn't like they did it in the middle of the show or anything. After the ad, there is absolutely nothing more that happens in the show - the last line has been said and the show is over; ten seconds later, it skips to commercials anyways. |

@telus.net | reply to Devanchya tbs is the worst, why would you watch their brutal cut and dubbed out movies anyway? they butcher too many movies I can't even take it for a minute. they are a paid advertising network 24/7, and they can eat a big back of ****. |

| reply to Devanchya You see, the way I look at it, it's not just TBS that's going too far. Fox's airing of F1 racing had ads for their upcoming coverage of the return of Baseball literally taking up 2/3 of the screen. They covered up a couple of passes, tight corners, and at one point they covered up the current stats with other text for their shows. The result there was you couldn't read either of them.
I personally didn't own a DVR until a couple years back when the stations got to the point of showing the exact same commercials every single break and sometimes twice during the same break. Isn't brain washing illegal? Make no mistake that's a form of it.
So since they've started doing the sound and more than half the screen crap, I've started removing those stations from my favorites. It's a sad thing really. I don't watch some of my favorite shows any more because of it. I guess in a way it's a blessing. I rent the full season on DVD a year or so later and get to watch it back to back instead.
What's sad is even the premium channels are starting to do it. I've already canceled my subscription to the Starz super pack (DirecTV) because of it and I'm about to cancel Showtime. Hell, even HBO has started advertising their other shows over the credits. All that's a no-no to me. I'll rent DVDs before I'll pay for that drivel!
In the end, I have to say I don't really mind commercials so much it's the frequency and type of them that get me and I simply don't take it. I move on if they push me too far and everyone else should do the same thing. That's the only way they'll learn. They lose viewers they'll realize they're making mistakes and either go out of business or change their ways. |

Yeah, well...
How long do you think that's going to last? It started with logos in the bottom corner, morphed through static banners to animated banners, then animated banners with visual effects, then sound effects and now they're experimenting with pausing the show to push more commercials during the supposedly commercial-free part of the programming.
Depending on the response they get, you might start seeing them all throughout the broadcast soon.
It's incredibly naive to say "well, they're just at the end so it's no big deal", because it IS a big deal. It's a chance to make more money, and you should know that they will explore every available avenue until they start getting enough complaints and losing enough viewers to finally show some restraint.
If it works for TBS, maybe it will work for ABC, NBC, CBS, etc . |

| reply to Shaft As far as I am concerned, TBS is unwatchable. There is no network out there which has as many commercials. Movies broadcast on it are all edited, sliced and diced, and not always to remove "questionable" content. They edit movies to simply add more commercials, taking out entire scenes. It is really a horrible station.

| reply to Devanchya Someone needs to start a site with pics of screens and how much they take up. Run a contest to see who's the worst station. The problem is the execs of these stations need to take a pay cut, not annoy the customers. If you aren't getting the ad revenue, make cuts, that's the way it goes. They also advertise their new shows while overlapping 1/2 of MY DAMN SCREEN!
Get that crap off of my screen! |
