Re: T-Mobile UMA does VoIP +

Curious about whether you had any issues setting up the 6086 Bluetooth to work with the Dock-N-Talk? I sent my Dock-n-Talk in for the firmware upgrade and purchased the Bluetooth module. I can get the 6086 to pair with the Dock-N-Talk. However, after I make or receive one phone call through the Dock-N-Talk, I lose all functionality to dial our answer incoming calls. There is still dial tone, but no functionality. When this happens, the bluetooth module blinks. I can reconnect by unplugging the Dock-N'Talk, which of course is a total pain, and is only good for the next phone call. I am wondering if there is a special setting on the 6086 that I need to update? Any thoughts?

Just curious, to the person using it in the DR. Can you send/receive text over Hotspot@Home?

Yeah, all my connections are in the US. I usually use my home router which is a Linksys WRT54G. I also got the Linksys T-Mobile router free, but I haven't set it up.

The Curve UMA is up and running from the DR. The T-mobile routers haven't arrived yet but having tech support activate hotspot@home seems have done the trick.

So much for making calls without hotspot@home and counting up the minutes. However, considering roaming is $2/minute, still not a bad deal.

Re: T-Mobile UMA does VoIP + Curve + International

I am still in the DR so the Curve hasn't worked "anywhere" here. I suppose your connections were all in the US?

I have a California area code and read that there were issues with UMA in California but that the issue was resolved.

I am hoping the Linksys router, which is touted as being specially configured to support the T-mobile UMA, will work from the DR. I'll keep you posted if it works.

said by Robert DR :

I got the curve (and 2 year contract) specifically to use while traveling in the Dominican Republic and save on roaming charges.

First test on a private Buffalo router with WPA failed. Great wifi but no UMA symbol and all calls failed. Second test at an "open" public linksys hotspot. Again, access to google with the wifi but no UMA symbol and all calls failed.

Since the DR has both Orange (UK) and formerly Verizon (Canada) mobile carriers, I would have thought they had the UMA infrastructure.

Tech support had me reset, wipe data and install upgraded curve software without success. Trying to get them to FEDEX the linksys router to see if using their router will work.

Any other suggestions or ideas on the UMA issue?
Have you been able to get the UMA connection to work anywhere? I am wondering if they didn't configure your account correctly or something. I have had no issues connecting to UMA over numerous different types of personal and Public Wi-Fi routers.

Make sure that your router is enabled for IPSec VPNs.

Looks like they just upped the Hotspot @ Home rate from $9.99 per month to $19.99 per month. I knew the $9.99 was a promo rate, but expected it to last a little longer.

Yes, it does I'm using wpa2 now.

Update:

So just a quick update, I got my Curve to work w/ UMA now with no issues. I am using a wireless belkin router as an AP with it hard wired into the provided actiontec router's lan ports calls no longer get dropped. So now laptops connect wirelessly to the Actiontec while the Cruve uses the wirless features of the Beklin. It's very quikly but it works.

I just got the T-mobile Curve and no joy here. I cant place or receive Wi-Fi calls. The funny thing is when I place the call it initially connects for the first 5 seconds. Then it abruptly drops the call and displays a "call failed" error message. I can send & receive messages no problem. (Im on a BES Server) I can also browse the web no problem, just cant send/receive calls that last longer than 5 seconds! I did some additional testing to see if band selection might be a solution. Unfortunately still no results. I tried each of the following modes on my router:
802.11 b
802.11 g
802.11 Mixed Mode
Each mode exhibits the same behavior. It initially connects for about 5 seconds and then drops the call with a "call failed" error. Im realying this info to our T-mobile corporate rep who is usually pretty good source of info. I'll post back when a solution is in hand.
Yes, please post back when you hear more.
I am using a linksys WRT54G with WEP and MAC Filtering and my Curve is placing and receiving WiFi calls with no issue. Also, there is no interference when using WiFi and Bluetooth at the same time which was a known issue with their Nokia 8086 UMA phone.

So far no issues for me, definetly loving this phone.

i have been using the hotspot @home feature on the nokia 6086 for about a week and i like it. I just make an effort to search and connect to available wifi signals when i am near them before initiating calls. seems like a pain for some people but its like playing with toys for me. the phone connects to my stored/saved networks automatically (home/work). cant wait to try it abroad!! oh 1 more thing... i checked up on this. if you and your friends already have unlimited t-mo to t-mo, when u call them it shows up as unlimited wifi minutes on the bill and the party you are calling still gets it free and shows up as t-mo to t-mo for them, assuming they arent on the wifi phone yet.

T-Mobile just launched the BlackBerry curve as another phone that works with their UMA service. Finally a better phone to choose from!

Thanks for your help. I have 2 6086's. I only play with the WiFi settings when I have the problem. This is unfortunately, way too often. I've noticed the problem may be related to a client location with multiple VPN wireless access points without internet access or DNS. I don't know if T-Mobile just doesn't have techs who can understand or fix this, or they just can't relay the information properly and won't let me speak with these people.
