I don't understand

It's almost as if people think that satellite radio is good. Merger or not, it's still only 33 kbs of data stream in aggregate. I wouldn't listen to that even if it was free. Why talk about this as if that kind of crappy audio is actually an alternative?

Re: I don't understand

Why even bother to post if you don't care about the topic?

Re: I don't understand

What makes you think I don't care about the topic?

The debate is being framed as if satellite radio is a viable alternative to other sources of entertainment. IMO, it is not, so I don't want readers of this thread to go jumping into contracts with them without someone saying how low the data rates are.

Regardless of my opinion, it's my hope that potential subscribers to these services will be alerted that some homework might be prudent. It was a post like mine that saved me from a similar mistake.

Thanks for asking such an insightful question.

Re: I don't understand

Satellite radio is clearly not an option for audiophiles, but it sounds no worse than FM.

If you're someone who would ask
Why talk about this as if that kind of crappy audio is actually an alternative?
then why would you post in a topic about whether the two satellite radio companies should be allowed to merge? Clearly you don't see them as relevant in any case.

I disagree. I think it sounds much worse, all other things being equal. Rip your favorite song into an MP3 at 33 kps and then tell me it sounds as good as FM.

Point taken. These services may not be relevant to me, but this merger is being treated as if they are viable alternatives to other content. This point of view in turn may lead people to assume by default that these services provide a comparable level of audio quality. This wouldn't be an issue except that you must pay to receive their content.

There are more than two positions here and to suggest that posting should be limited to only those who are "for" or "against" the merger is less than fair. I take the position that the merger, while mildly interesting news, will not improve the quality of either service.

All I'm trying to do is point out that 33 kbs may not sound good to you (if, for example, you have ears) and you may wish to consider this before running out and signing up.

Why point that out here? Because no one else has.

Re: I don't understand

I have Sirius, and it sounds like FM to me. I signed up only after listening to it for a few weeks.

I also rip mp3s using LAME vbr. I'd use ogg, because in a head-to-head test of wma, aac, ogg, aacplus, mp3, and iTunes mp3, I liked ogg the most. The problem was that most devices don't support ogg.

I've also listened to a 32kbps mp3, and I know what that sounds like. But Sirius' doesn't use 32kbps mp3. They use a newer, better, vbr codec. And it sounds at least as good as FM.

Sirius and XM are competitors for terrestrial radio, and for mp3 players. Most people fall into this target audience. They're not competitors for high-end stereo systems.

And most audiophiles would listen to Sirius or XM before they made a purchase, because they tend to be a little anal-retentive about quality.
