3 edits | I noticed they were holding mail for some reason yesterday, but they're up and passing traffic this morning. Just sent myself a successful test message through an external mail server. It was forwarded to Hughes.net and directly back to me via the satellite connection.

via webmail: "Could not connect to specified server" and via my local mail-reader: "Could not connect to server"
I hope they're not rejecting my incoming mail. |

| Using the web-based system one of our accounts connects fine (as it does with Outlook Express). The one that does not connect with OE returns a message on the web-based system saying "unable to connect to server". Sounds like one mail server is down. -- Hughesnet, DW4000, Satmex5, 1130, XP Pro SP2, 4.2.1.10 |

| reply to Vtblues I've got 2 email accounts and the wife has one. Not sure what the status of hers is, but my two, one works, and the other doesn't. Go figure, the one that does NOT work is my primary address. And, when I send to myself (primary) from the working address, I get a server/delivery error mailed back to me....
I've also tried the password reset thing, to no avail. I've tried checking the mail from Apple's Mail.app and Hughes's web based mail throught Hughes's connection, and I've tried through AT&T on my Treo....
Graveyard dead on all tries.
There was something on their customer care page about some sort of update between 12:30 and 6:30 AM EDT, and the notice is still up as of 9:30 AM EDT.
Must be nice to have your customers as a captive audience. I can't think of ANY reason to have Hughes as ISP if you have ANY other choices for broadband.... |

| reply to Vtblues Last night Hughes' outgoing mail server claimed intelligently that it didn't recognise my username or password (same ones as always).
Today incoming mail is working fine through other ISP's but not Hughes, where the server refuses to respond. Outgoing mail returns with the error "invalid user ID or password"(!)
C'mon Hughes. We understand that you force us to use your outgoing server in order to prevent people dumping spam on everyone else... but doing so comes with a responsibility to keep things running no matter what.
You know - live backups and alternate routes for when (not if) something fails.
A professional service delivery service that quits when its one and only delivery van hiccups is not a professional delivery service, is it? |

What happened to the usual amateur damage control guys? You know, "everyone else does it too" and "I've had Hughes for 107 years and this is my first ever problem"...
Oh well, maybe this is a double technical blooper - along with mail gone kaputz they managed to shut off their own systems.... ? |

1 edit | reply to Vtblues well...
I emailed tech support about it, but they'll probly reply via my hughes address, rather than the earthlink address I suggested they use, in which case, I won't receive their reply!
Look over my posting history, but I've not had problems with Direcway/Hughes since I repointed and grounded the "installer's" crappy job.
No troubles until now.
But, my contract is coming up soon! and perhaps I'll have an option with that Verizon fiber-optic plan by then!
Wouldn't it be nice.
I guess this points out that, indeed, all those who have proposed avoiding using hughes mail, are much wiser than I.
I guess I'll go back to my old address... |

1 edit | You are right. A valid criticism. Sorry to lean on Hughes a bit heavily, but despite their unwillingness to discuss anything openly they do take notice and respond to adverse criticism when it might affect their revenue.
The problem is not which mail ISP we are using (I don't use Hughes because of their past performance) but that all OUTGOING smtp mail is forced through their servers anyway, which means that regardless of how we receive it, when Hughes goes down for outgoing mail, so do we... |

| reply to Vtblues Believe me yesme2, I can hop on the 'dissin Hughes' wagon with the best of them - I really can't blame anyone for getting fed up and spouting when that urge strikes. It's easy to do.
And perhaps mentioning their competition, Verizon FiOS, EvDO (hmmm, anything else?) makes a point. |

I don't consider myself wiser than much of anyone (unless THEY prove that I am ) but I will say that my 11 email accounts (NONE at Hughes) which are checked every 10 minutes 24/7 are cranking along fine.
A .US domain registered at GoDaddy for $5.99/year and another $5 per YEAR to host the domain at E-Rice.net, even if one only uses the 5 email accounts that come with the hosting package, makes a lot of sense to me...

I agree 100%.
I have only one hughes account because HN will not send me news/account informations to my extern account. But they seem to have problems to do that also to their own email accounts.

1 edit | FWIW, and coincidentally, about half an hour ago I received an email from GoDaddy and they are running a special where one can register 2 .NET domains with them for $5/year each.
Being a domain junky, I just registered a couple more with them, opting for 2 years each for a total of $20 plus the standard 40-cent per domain ICAAN fee. Dunno what I will do with them, but good .COM and .NET domains are getting harder and harder to find. Country-guy.net and country-gal.net are MINE!
Standard disclaimer: No connection to GoDaddy other than as a frequent customer...
