| reply to Vtblues Re: Hughes email down?
Just an update- I got this about 20 minutes ago (14:09 EDT) in reply to my email to tech support about 7AM EDT. It came in through the address that DOES work....
Thank you for contacting HughesNet Technical Support. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
I understand how frustrating it must be for you since you are unable access your HughesNet email account, and we are sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.
I understand that you are unable to access your email account. HughesNet is experiencing technical difficulties with Webmail, which might have caused this issue. Our engineers are working on this issue and hopefully it will be resolved soon.
I wish I could have been more helpful, and thank you for contacting us.

2 edits | reply to Vtblues Interesting how only a few folks are having issues with email. I noted also that some are with webmail, some with POP mail. Based upon the extremely limited number of individuals posting to this thread, I have to conclude that I belong to the silent majority. Those without any HughesNet email problems that is.
The majority with no HughesNet email problems that is. So I'm gonna point ya'all to the basic HowTo for the obligatory settings check: go to »customercare.myhughesnet.com/ and scroll down the right hand column to EMAIL.
Those of ya who have your clients setup correctly may then be experiencing DNS problems, as opposed to POP server problems. To those who qualify, I recommend using the numerical POP/SMTP server address; specifically 64.97.131.50
Any IMAP users complaining about HughesNet email?

1 edit | said by Vtblues :The POP and SMTP aren't accepting the user name or passwords. Yeah that makes it clear, like other posts before, that your installation and DNS are fine and it is a problem with the HN mailserver
On edit, HN runs a message when you call TS, that THEY have a problem with THEIR email server....
So better do not follow the poster above and starting messing around with your installation, HN has to fix their error

The problem is not which mail ISP we are using (I don't use Hughes because of their past performance) but that all OUTGOING smtp mail is forced through their servers anyway, which means that regardless of how we receive it, when Hughes goes down for outgoing mail, so do we... Some points that I will tack on to your post mainly because:
1. Your statement is completely untrue. You may be using Hughes SMTP server in your e-mail setup, but most of us with other e-mail accounts do not, and there is not one bit of trouble with bypassing Hughes completely.
2. A lot of us have recommended staying away, as much as possible, from any server that Hughes provides, because they are so inept at running servers.
3. Hughes e-mail servers are not run by Hughes, they are run by Tucows.
4. A number of Hughes e-mail users receive (subscribed) automatic e-mails that originate with my e-mail account. Here are a couple of examples of the sort of bounces I'm getting today:
Reporting-MTA: dns; n124.sc0.he.tucows.com Received-from-MTA: dns; mail.arcatapet.com (63.161.122.34) Arrival-Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 16:20:04 +0000
Final-Recipient: rfc822; xxxx@hughes.net Action: Failed Status: 4.4.7 (delivery time expired) The bounce occurred within seconds of the send.
and
Remote MTA n168.sc0.cp.net: network error
- SMTP protocol diagnostic: 554 Transaction failed
Reporting-MTA: dns; n124.sc0.he.tucows.com Received-from-MTA: dns; mail.arcatapet.com (63.161.122.34) Arrival-Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 20:20:52 +0000
Final-Recipient: rfc822; xxxx@hughes.net Action: Failed Status: 5.3.0 (other or undefined mail system status) Remote-MTA: dns; n168.sc0.cp.net
This last one was to someone with 4 e-mail accounts; 3 are working, only that one fails, according to the user. Of course it is her primary account that is failing. -- W2K Server|Toshiba Satellite XP Pro|HughesNet IA8/1410/7000 2-watt Business Internet on .98 meter fixed | Datastorm .98 XF2 2-watt on 1990 Blue Bird Wanderlodge "Blue Thunder" 22 tons of rolling steel! |

| reply to Vtblues One of my two email accounts does not work. The error is:
Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: 'mail.hughes.net (1)', Server: 'mail.hughes.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC18
Not sure what all of that means. Hope it comes up soon as it is my husband's only email account. |

I was sorta thinking you'd have investigated the manual client setup link, that's what I used way back when to set up my xxx@hughes.net account. I just looped several more test messages, again all successful. I've got three email addresses on two accounts, one of them @hughes.net. Other than the fact that I'm using 64.97.131.50 instead of mail.hughes.net, I can't explain why I seem to be the only one in this thread with no email issues today.
That said, I seldom use the associated web-based access for any of the three addresses, so I've not bothered to test them today. I generally assume that if my MS Outlook is processing SMTP/POP ok, then the web-based accounts are likely working as well.

| reply to Vtblues Just talked to Hughes at 7:30AM EDT 7/10/07. Got about as much info as if I asked the dead Howard Hughes himself! No prediction on when the problem will be resolved. Their message on site said there would be maintenance done on Sunday--guess Sunday is still here. I have several managers who cannot send out email since they only use outlook & OE, and Hughes is our only smtp. Can use webmail (corporate or hughes) to send out, but try expalining to everyone that they need to type or copy and paste all their contact info, etc til Hughes gets off their a's. I got stuck with satellite because cable wanted thousands to bring a line in and dsl was too far away. Fiberopt not in area yet. |

| Anyone who is still down might want to prepare themselves for losing all info kept on their servers...sounds like a major SAN failure, with associated bad DR practices, maybe with untested backups being restored and tested...and found to be bad.
Thankfully I use Outlook and never leave anything up there, but curious as to how many have webmail working but not pop3? My webmail is out as well.
BTW I was quoted $5k by Timewarner to hook me up - $5 @1000feet... |
