[CATV] Local HD channels

I have an HDTV with a built in QAM tuner. If I only have basic cable service(no box) can I still get the local channels in HDTV?

Yea, put up an antenna...

(but, if you mean through the cable w/out a box & if it does NOT do QAM - then no)

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm curious.

If the RF out from the cable box (while on a hi def channel) is ran to a hi def tv with ATSC tuner can the tuner decode the signal to get hi def on both tv's?

Nope, just a plain SD signal like what comes out of RF out on VCR playback. The box automatically downconverts HD signals to SD on the RF, video & S-video outputs.

gadawg,
You may already know this but here are the local channels so you don't have to do that extensively long search: (first run your cable directly into the tv)

72.2 NBC HD
74.2 CW HD
80.3 Fox HD
71.1 ABC HD
71.6 Ket HD
72.1 CBS HD

You do not have to have a digital or hd box to get these, just a tuner in your TV.

Hope that helps.

I called Insight today to see if you can get a DVR with just the basic cable service. They CSR said yes you could. I expected the answer to be no. Can anyone verify if this is true?

Well, I don't have any premium channels, nor do I have the "digital" $12 package. Just 2-71 and we have two dual-tuner DVRs here.

So yes.

yes, you can get a dvr with basic cable. I am doing that until I move to my new house (cutting bills a bit there)
I asked to have classic channels cut but keep the dvr/hd option (just didnt want to get rid of recorder and menu.)
$13 for basic and $13 for the box. And I still have the $30 internet price.
You do lose both the analog and digital classic channels.

Wait a second, you're telling me that Insight includes HD OTA channels with their mmost basic service ($13) and if my TV supports QAM, I need nothing inbetween??? It costs nothing extra to have local HD channels if your TV supports it? Is this all of Insight's area?

Check the channel guide that came with the last bill. It lists all the channels that come with basic service. All local HD in Louisville is included in basic. From other forums it appears that cable providers must provide local HD channels unscrambled by law.

Thanks for all the previous posts. If the wife will do it we will have only basic and a DVR. That will save us $60.00 a month.

Sweet!
The HDTV channels have the same grouping (white box) as the analog OTA channels!!

I just called Insight and the women claimed the local HD channels were unencrypted, however I needed a "cable box" or a cable card. I thought the whole point of the cable cards and the STBs were to either receive digital cable on a tv that couldn't do ATSC, or to tune to scrambled digital channels. So now the question is, do I need a box if my TV has a QAM tuner (meaning she's wrong) or do I in fact need the box? Can't use the card 'cause my HTPC obviously can't use cable cards.

You do NOT need THEIR box or a cc, but your TV, HTPC, tuner, etc. must be QAM capable & must able to find them in a search. I will tell you, I had some issues on my Sony SXRD XBR2 set being able to find all of our local free QAM/HD signals - I had to do some manipulating through the channel scan/add/delete menu to get all of them to appear, but they finally did. Understand that the channel numbers that YOUR TV finds them on will NOT match the numbers Insight uses on their box. (if you want them to match, you'll need a cc)

Also, depending on the tuner, some channels will come up on the actual physical/virtual #'s that Insight sends out on the system, while other might find them according to the PSIP data in the TV signal. (eg: in my market, our local ABC-HD channel comes up on 20.1 on some sets, while on others it comes up as 119.2)

It does not work in Decatur. I just rescanned and the only HD channel I picked up was 81.1 (an insight advertising channel) I used to get a few HD channels but those disappeared about a month ago.

Well then, you have some other kind of problem, because the Decatur system is served from the Springfield headend & has the EXACT same lineup as we do. (except for the public access channels) And just this past weekend, I hooked up 2 HD sets & after letting them scan, they found EVERY clear HD/digital channels they were supposed to.
What kind of set do you have - I have found the tuners in some Sony TV's seem to have issues with some clear QAM signals, but there is a work-around.

Interesting - it is a Mitsubishi WD-52631. It pulls in OTA HD fine.

Here is the link to the set specs

Or how about publishing the list of the physical HD channels that are available in Springfield?
