| reply to mbkowns Re: 16mb / 2mb Status Update
I think there's a lot of misinformation floating around when it comes to having to replace your modem. Here's the speed capibilities of the DOCSIS standard:
It's not like some modems are only 8meg/s modems, while others are 2meg/s. I think it's likely more of an issue of replacing all docsis 1.0 modems with 1.1 or 2.0 certified modems, if charter is upgrading their protocol along with the upgrades.
But even grandpa methusula, the SB4100 is docsis 1.1 compliant, and that's like 10 years old. So maybe they're switching to DOCSIS 2.0 during this upgrade? I don't know. but it sounds weird hearing people say, "I will have to change my modem because it's only rated at 8mbps", I don't understand how that can possibly be true. |

| Its not misinformation, its just that many of the modems out claim to be compliant but just are not when push comes to shove. Remember lots of hardware comes out before stuff is certified..like wireless stuff for example.
The webstar modems are also "suppose" to get high speeds to, but had to be replaced. |

| how's that line go? "In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In Practice, there is."
something like that.
Anyway I just know that there's also a lot of IDIOT technicians out there that don't know what they're talking about. I had an issue in August of '05 where the power on the line coming in was WAY too high, I think he said it was reading 28dbmv in the house at the cable that connects to the modem. In my mind, it was a miracle the modem was able to stay on at all (frequent drops were why the tech was called out). I told him, "that's way too high, that needs to be fixed..." to which the tech replied, "oh no, I like my signal levels nice and strong, the higher the better--you'll get better downloads that way".
I thanked Einstein for his time and sent him on his way and then got them to schedule a different person to come out. The 2nd guy was great, told me that the signal was way too high on that frequency, and called in a maintenance truck to do some tuning, I forget if it was at the node or at my drop where they did the work.
The point is...what was my point? There's just a lot of people who don't know what they're talking about is all. I am no expert, but I've done a lot of reading, and I am the go-between with charter for 5 different family member's households. When something goes wrong, they call me, and i come over and troubleshoot, call charter if necessary, etc. I've learned a lot that way. |

| reply to Aletus Have been dealing with our local charter corp. office for the past few weeks fixing a packet loss issue, and was assigned a resolution manager here in Greenville named Sheila. I inquired about the 16/2 service for here in Greenville, per her it will be here in GVL, SC 3/1/08 at latest by mid March, however she refused to disclose any pricing for a service that far away from it's launch date. Hope this helps the Greenville people out...... |

Useless's post is useful in that it shows that this is not just another one of charter's vaporware products for our area. We still see posts from people who do not have 10meg available in their area yet.
Useless has also been of great help to me and many others on many occasions. I actually get more help from him than I do if I go down to my local headend.

Totally my bad! I'm still the new guy on the block, sorry.
I seriously thought he was just being a troll. |

| rofls. no offense taken.
I was surprised by the dates I was given. I know where they tested it, although not sure about the results. Think they were favorable though. (people were bumped to 16m without knowing )
The hardest part about rolling it out isnt the new technology, its the money making portion. And if it will saturate the network...i think we are looking to just have 5m,10m,16m until Docsis 3 |

| reply to Flip221 Welcome to the results of users and providers conditioning themselves into a pee pee match consisting solely of download throughput rates for bragging rights.
Pushing the envelope to get to at least 20% of Japanese throughput is commendable but I wish providers would talk about something other than download speed. I guess it's supply and demand.
At any rate hopefully we'll all have a better internet in the future. I thought things would be 25/5 by now and latency on any network would be a minimal issue at best (when major rings went down or something like this) but that is not the case so I'll take anything really consistent at this point... and that's what I've done. |

| reply to Flip221 said by Flip221 :OK, and back to ~14 Mb down, but still only 800-900 Kb up. You're not alone in having a speed bump, man. Yours was more drastic than mine, however. Today I had to reboot my modem while trying to troubleshoot a vonage problem, and when everything came back up, these are the speeds I'm getting:
Before, my average download was 10400-10600, with MAX peaks maybe around 10700. NEVER in hundreds of speedtests, did I ever even reach 10900, let alone 1100. Upload's the same as it always has been.
Looks like they're up to something. I don't know what, but I'll enjoy and appreciate my 15% bump in download speed while it lasts. |
