Your all on crack, speed tests are wildly inaccurate, want to see whats really going on go read your modems config jeez.
Nope, they are inaccurate in the sense of being different speeds all over the states. But they are accurate in seeing your BEST speed when you get it.

They would get similar results from newsgroups if they used them. I also see 1.2MB/s-1.9MB/s from newsgroups.

I wonder if Charter uses something like Comcast for powerboost...

Apparently the mods didn't like me correcting dks7 on his incorrect usage of you're vs your, so i won't do that this time.

As I said in the post that was deleted, the speedtests are accurate enough; especially when the results are borne out in the real world. I was seeing about 1400KB/s on usenet today, whereas I usually only hit 1300KB/s.

I wish I could see the config on my SB5100 to see how much the cap changed, but last I checked, you can't see your provisioned speed on the SB5100.

I see 1375kb/sec 24/7 anytime i do a real world download. Never fluctuates, yet speedtests can vary wildly, also keep in mind most speed tests use small test files, and you will get an immediate boost for a second or two usually on the test, and that greatly influences the tests. Again read your modem config for what you can actually get real world, speed tests are nothing more than e-penis measurements for the bored.

I normally see 1300KB/s in real world downloads. Times that by 8, and that's right around 10.4mb/s. My speedtests normally show 10.4-10.6 which I feel is accurate enough. Today, they were/are showing me about 11.5 on the speedtest. Real world was showing me 1400-1450KB/s on usenet, which translates to 11.4-11.6mb/s.

In my experience, the speedtest.net results are pretty decent, even for high speed connections.

Do you know of some secret way to pull the config off my SB5100? Because I know for a fact that none of the modem's pages show me the provisioned speed. I would be interested in looking at that though.

This is what I got at 3:24 AM. I wish this wall all day speeds. But it is good. I can't wait for 16 meg. I will sign up day one. I hope it gets here earlier than the projected Dec 08 time frame

Last Result:
Download Speed: 10464 kbps (1308 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1007 kbps (125.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

lol you really are the uber troll geek aren't ya...

Your modem configuration is not a true measure of your connectivity to the internet. It is simply the speed at which your modem connects to the local headend. This would be a great number to use if peoples destinations were located in their local headend. But they are not, the speed at which charter transports your packets to places like google / yahoo is what people actually care about.

There are many factors that can play into the speed that someone gets when they download data from a website including (but not limited to):
sync speed
Noise
Switch utilization
Traffic shaping
Routing Path
Utilization level of upstream carrier
Proper load balancing (route science)

anyway the connection between your cable modem and charter is a static speed that has nothing to do with the load on charters network and the level of utilization on the upstream provider that they purchase bandwidth from.

yada yada ya im aware of all that gobbleegook. I know plenty about packet transport over networks and how distance and hops effect overall speed. MY ARGUMENT is that charter isnt doing squat with your modem or your speed and you can prove this by looking at your sync rates. Thats the max your gonna get no matter what. So some guy coming on here saying he's pulling 12mbit in a speed test means nothing.

I know there's no sense arguing with you but if you read my posts, I've repeatedly said that my speedtest results are borne out in real life with the actual throughput I'm seeing. They did SOMETHING.

I understand how the config files work and I realize that even if I knew what my provisioned speed was (which I can't look at because my SB5100 does not show the provisioned speed anywhere on the pages that I know of) that would be my ultimate final cap. I also realize that due to tcp overhead, I would probably only get somewhere between 85-95% of that cap.

I don't know what's so hard to understand about what i'm saying.

Re: 16mb / 2mb Status Update

I agree matt.

I also see 10.4 mbits from speedtests and 1300kb/sec.. never once has it reached over that. so charter is doing something on your end. However mine hasn't changed, i'm positive your modem configs have changed. Only if the 5100's showed it huh so u could shut this guy up.

Hope 16mb does come out in Jan for us "stl area" users =)

The Sync rate has nothing to do with it, because I'm pulling 1.8MB/s from newsgroups regularly now, modem is not even close to that.

Re: 16mb / 2mb Status Update

when i went to the local office in madison, wi to pick up a dvr box monday the lady told me 16/2 was coming sat dec 1. well its the first now and ive called twice and they still dont have it, ill try again later in the day. my internet went down from 10pm to 2am last night and it never goes down, so i called and the tech said they were doing some upgrades in my area for the new 16/2 tier. It should be anytime now.. *i hope*. he also said he believes the 10mb tier was going to come down $20 in price and the 16/2 would be either what the current price is for 10/1 or possibly $5 more. Ill keep you all posted...

Been awhile since I bugged the online chat support guys, so I dialed in and checked, this was their response:

I'm sorry Matt, it looks like the 10MB is still the highest we offer in your area. We are doing a lot of upgrades though, and there's a chance the 16Mb will become available before the end of the year. You should be notified by mail if it becomes available or you can check back in later on this month.

Hi,

I just got off the phone with Tech Support.

He said in the STL Area, it should be here around the end of Dec or Jan 1st. *I know someone said that, just confirming.* He also stated that 10 meg will drop $20 and 16 will be on a new promotional term for 1 year @ $59.99. it could change tho.

He also said 20 meg will be deploying a few months after that. In tx and ca to start.

The wait is because everyone on 3 meg is being bumped to 5 meg, so once thats done 16 will be out in most areas, this post is mostly for stl area users.
