The most serious of which is obstruction of justice relating to that video of him removing boxes from his office, violating a court order.

4 of 13 charges actually. He could get 35 years, but they think 3 to 9 years in reality. I say goo job, nail his arrogant fat ass. -- I cannot deny anything I did not say |

| reply to digitalfutur From my limited understanding of the case, it looks like the jury did a very competent job.
I have mixed feelings about Black. On one hand he was smart, articulate, witty, cultured, and an amazing entrepreneur. On the other he was arrogant, vindictive, and possessed of such an incredible sense of entitlement that I think it blinded him to the criminality of his actions.
This could ruin him financially and the jail time could be significant. -- "The mayfly lives only one day. And sometimes it rains." -- George Carlin |

| reply to digitalfutur It's not illegal to be an arrogant ass, but clearly the jury felt that certain of his arrogant actions were illegal. I still wonder about that obstruction charge (apparently he was complying with an eviction notice). I'd say he probably got bad legal advice on which instructions to follow (courts vs. landlord).

1 edit | reply to donoreo Yep, 4 it now is.
He's to surrender his passport until July 19th, at which time there will be a hearing to determine if should be kept in custory until the sentencing hearing on Nov. 30.
Given the time between now and then, I think he should be released on bail. After all, he's a first time non-violent offender...

I don't think there are "Club Feds" in the US? Someone from the US clarify for me? |

| He renounced his Canadian citizenship in order to be able to acquire the British title of Lord Black of Crossharbour. According to Wikipedia,
...even if he were to regain his right to reside in the country "Canadian citizenship can't be granted to those who are criminally inadmissible and neither the minister nor the governor in council (cabinet) can override that," according to an immigration department spokesperson.
The loss of his Canadian citizenship also makes it impossible for Black to be transferred to a Canadian prison where he would be eligible for parole much sooner than if he were to serve time in the United States or Britain.

Wouldn't it be possible for him to claim citizenship by birth, regardless of any other qualifications? |

Black committed the ultimate White Collar crime in America. Stealing from the stockholders. Stealing for the stockholders is generally excused. And the criminal conviction is just the beginning. | reply to digitalfutur Black's reputation is assured. Not as a capitalist privateer, but as a scholarly historian. The books on FDR and Richard Nixon, will, a hundred years from now, assure Lord Black's positive reputation. There are different security levels of prisons in the federal system just as there are in the various states' prison systems.
It is up to the U. S. Bureau of Prisons to determine where he will serve his time.
A minimum security facility can be something such as a separate purpose prison or it can be part of the holding cells on a military base, for example.
For the truly bad types, there is always a place like Marion, Illinois which is one of the federal supermax prisons. -- Always Reach Beyond Your Grasp |
