Re: [General] Magicjack

Sounds pretty cool but it does concern me that your computer has to be on for it to work. When I think of the times that I want to restart my computer or just have it off, it becomes a problem.

My computer runs all the time except the monitor. My kids are too lazy to shut it down anyway. It is really no different then say a DVR running all the time. I do reboot my machine about every week and will continue to do so. I will be without service for the most 5 minutes. Worth it for the money savings if you ask me.

It would be nice if it could plug into a router or a computer.

Yes it would. But i suppose I can just take one of the old boxes I have laying around and dedicate that to MagicJack. oh oh I see it only runs on XP or vista.. Wonder why not on my standard win2k?

Also noticed that Magicjack has just had a price increase. This morning the shipping was free. Now they are charging $3.95 shipping per device, cant even get a break on shipping for two.

The links from BBR must be ringing up lots of sales for them.

I see nothing on their site prior to paying for the order that tells anything about the phone number one gets with the device... so do you just wait until it arives to see if the number is useful to you? that's not good...

I must of been one of the last few orders to get free shipping this morning, had to pay tax since MagicJack is out of Florida though. They won't give you a number ahead of time as it seems they are just about to add many local numbers across the US according to their forums. It is funny I had never heard of them until this whole Sunrocket thing today as you mentioned. They probably had a record day of sales.

Got my MagicJack today 7/16 after ordering on Friday 7/13. Very quick shipping! Plugged it into a usb port and used the usb extension cable that comes with it. Don't want any bending in case my pc gets moved around.

Software loaded as soon as I plugged it in. A window to register 911 info soon appeared. Another screen to select available numbers after that. A software update was also automatically downloaded. Nearest number to Florida was Nashville, TN exchange. They are suppose to be adding more numbers by September.

Voice quality on the few test calls I have made are excellent. Just have to remember to dial area code for local numbers. Considering dropping Earthlink TrueVoice as soon as I get a local number. Probably will get a bare bones plan with another service just for backup since this MagicJack service is so new.

Packaging was very professional looking and bubble pack wasn't easy to open I must add. Looks like they are going to sell this in retail stores in the future.

Magicjack works 'jes fine on Win2K.
I did have the audio-hijack glitch, easily reset using instructions elsewhere on this page.

Has anyone tried inserting magicjack directly into Modem or router USB port or using Ethernet to USB adapter?

It won't work, it uses software and has to be connected to a computer. It is based on SJPhone since they bought out the company.
