[Speed] My Upload is super fast, but my download has always been

I live in Eden Prairie, MN. I have dealt with this kind of stuff many years before and have had few headaches with Time Warner RoadRunner, now Comcast seems to suck, a lot. My internet used to disconnect a lot after we switched to Comcast, and we fixed that problem by sending the techs out a few times, and finally figuring out my modem sucked, so they gave me a new one, but the exact same model. Now my connection seems to be fine. My main problem now is connection speed, down/up.

My friend a mile or 2 away has about 7-8000 down and about 700 up, while I'm getting about 2000/2000 up/down, it's really strange. I'd rather have more down speed, I don't know what the problem is, I've reset my modem several thousand times and have called Comcast and no one knows how to fix this, all they ever tell me is they're waiting for some lines to be fixed somewhere or something, and that my speeds are caused by something they cannot control.

My speeds are constantly like this, I maybe lucky to get 3000/2000, but most of the time it sticks around 2300/2000.

Cable Modem Information
Ambit
Cable Modem : DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 Compliant
Boot Code Version : 2.1.6d
Software Version : 2.93.1008
Hardware Version : 1.20

Current network I am on is wireless, 11mb, and the Router I am using is an MR314. This is the same router that I used before in the same house with RoadRunner before it switched to Comcast, and I used to get speeds of 5000/384 with the Shark fin modem by 3Com. I really think it's the modem, but every time they come over my house to give me a new modem, it's the exact same one, and they don't have anything else.

I don't have my MS firewall on, NAT firewall is on the router, and I am using AVG Free Edition 7.5.

(strange... I usually am not at 3000 down...)

»/tweakr/block:···a=normal

»/linequality/nil/2251495

Is it just my node that's outside my house? Maybe too many users on it in this neighborhood? Why am I always at half the advertised speeds and have more than double my upload speed constantly?

Re: [Speed] My Upload is super fast, but my download has always

Hey. You say. "I live in Eden Prairie, MN".
Your testing out of Texas. Can you find a closer test?
Try this »www.speedtest.net/
and choose one closer. Also try a few of them and see what results you get. Maybe your testing too far.

You can also try changing this number --->Receive Window (RWIN): 125560.

Set it back to winxp default (64240) then do a reboot and try the tweak and speedtests again.
Then try 65530 and reboot and try try the speedtest and tweak again.

I think if you play with this you may find the result you need. Maybe not but try anyway if you have the time.

You can download DrTCP from this site. (dslreports) Or you can try this TCP Optimizer program. »www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
Check your settings at this site too. Use the analyzer. I tried to link but wouldn't happen.

I try a few differnet ones and find that i can increase my speeds. When I use the default i get crap speeds like you.
when i use 200020 I get super fast downloads and uploads.
BUT i have a problem with lag. Theres a formula for figuring these numbers if you want to search google for it.

I had comcast 8000/768 originally but now it 16000/2000 so I am in the process of finding the right numbers too. Good luck!

My ping to the Texas server is about 30 ms, and I knew it would be the same, but here's the test to the Twin Cities server:

And also, I've been using TCP Optimizer forever now, so I guess I'll try changing to higher RWIN numbers and see what happens.

This is with my RWIN at: 256960

I don't think it has to do with my RWIN.

What speeds do you get when you plug your PC directly into the modem (with no software firewall)?

I'm thinking its his hardware, he said its max connection is 11mpbs well im on wireless and its max connection is 54mbps but im not getting what i did at my other place which was hardwired into the cable modem

Last Result:
Download Speed: 11082 kbps (1385.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2007 kbps (250.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Thats the speed test i just did..at my other place that was hard wired i would get 22mbps down..i think its just the wireless ..so many factors that come into play using wireless as for speed/pings.

Edit: I would not use those TCP optimizer programs..use this sites Dr TCP if your going to change those settings..

256xxx whatever it was sounds to high of a RWIN to set..i have mine set at 128,480 which i used when i was hard wired to the cable modem and was getting 22mbps on the d/l

I'm not saying this is his problem but it could be.

I'm thinking that it's not my wireless, because I have not changed anything hardware wise in the past 3 years and like I said, I used to get the RoadRunner advertised speeds of 5000/384. My upload speed is just weird, why would I constantly get 2000 up if I were on the 6000/384 plan? Something is just wrong Comcast side, I'm sure, just thought someone would know why and what.

Since you are only using a WiFi connection, are you absolutely certain that you are using your WiFi connection? I have on several occasions taken service calls for slow internet problems and found that the customer was actually using a neighbor's WiFi connection. Try powering your WiFi AP/router down and see if you still have a connection.

Yes, I have mine named, and have an access filter that I change and things I check on the router every couple weeks or so on 192.168.0.1.

I did the powerline thing but didn't really like it after a while. I moved to wireless instead and found that to be better. I had great speeds on this same wireless router with RoadRunner, it was LITERALLY this past summer when they were doing the switch over when my speeds dropped to about 1000-2000 down, it's usually better now.

I did tests then, and concluded with everyone here that my speeds were due to the fact that they were still getting the kinks out of things with the whole switch over, but now it's been almost a year, and I expected my internet now to have advertised speeds at least, but nope. I have also given up on calling them, because every time I talk to the people on the phone, they say there's nothing they can do except send a tech out, and when the tech comes out, he tells me that it's a line issue and he can't handle it, and he will tell Comcast about it, but yeah, nothing is being done. I get weird speeds, and nothing can be fixed to what I have seen so far.

It's almost as if Comcast sees the problem already, and can't fix my download, so they're giving me an extremely fast upload speed to say they're sorry.

You may want to check out purchasing your own modem. I found a v4 Linksys BEFCMU10 at Newegg for about the price you will pay for 14 months lease.

Looks like a duplex mismatch.
Try this test and see if they agree:
»jlab4.jlab.org:7123/
If you do indeed have a duplex mismatch, please reply, otherwise I do not know

That is definitely the next step in testing. Why the OP has not done so yet is beyond me. I agree, it's a simple way to test whether it's the router/wifi. Until that's done, everything else is pure speculation, really.

F.W.I.W., I have found that many of those Web 100 test servers are notorious for indicating a "duplex mismatch" when none exists...

I finally lugged my computer to the network room and did some tests, and also tried my laptop just in case. Same speeds:

So... it should be just Comcast side then? Why are they giving me super fast upload speeds and mediocre down?

And btw, these speeds seem to be constant now, better than they used to be when they were sitting around 1500/2000 or 1500/1500 about 4 months ago. Then it was about 800/300 and 1500/300 before that, lol.

Were those tests done connected to the LAN side of your router, or connected directly to the cable modem? It has been known to make a difference. I think that the Netgear MR314 has a half duplex 10-base-t WAN interface which can limit your internet speeds.
