VPN Windows 2003 Server and WRT54G router

I need some help setting up a home vpn server I have windows 2003 serving running with active directory and dns and vpn application running, but I am having issues getting the vpn started I have configured the vpn by following a video I found on this forum for PPTP server setup I have open the port on my router 1723 to designated network card that will be handing my vpn connection. But when go to test out the vpn connection from my job I can not establish a connection. My question is is my router the piece of hardware that is giving me issues because GRE protocol? or is it that I have the router has my dhcp and did not setup a dhcp server?

GRE protocol also needs to be forwarded to the server.

To add, our friend DocLarge seems to indicate some versions of the WRT54G don't natively support GRE Protocol 47 traffic...

»Re: Use VPN or remote Desktopo?

Hopefully he will chime in and provide additional details/help...

Make sure you enable PPTP Pass Through (ie. GRE Protocol 47 traffic) on the router. From a V8 device (and should be similar on earlier devices)...

Whoops,

sorry I'm late I've been working on vpn configuration with the Cisco 871w and I've finally got it figured out (Boom baby!!)

If your WRT54G is a Ver. 5 or later, you won't be able to use it for your vpn server because these models do not support passing "PROTOCOL 47" (uppercase for emphasis ) or "GRE" as it's commonly referred to.

The Linksys routers that do pass GRE with "native" firmware out of the box are the following:

1) WRV200
2) WRVS4400N
3) RVS4000
4) RV016
5) RV042
6) RV082

By far, the most affordable is the WRV200 for around $75.

Thx for the info. So if even if I update the firmware on the router to a 3rd party firmware it will not make a difference for the GRE or 46 protocol? So you recommended for me to get a vpn router a WRV200 are zywall vpn routers better and can you recommend one

Your particular router version doesn't have enough memory space to support a firmware update, "unless" you're able to squeeze a "micro" third party firmware version for that router; I've only seen it posted once or twice in the linksys forum about guys getting a micro version of hyperwrt or something like that onto the version 5 and later WRT54G's.

In the immediacy, your best bet would be to just get a router that supports GRE. For an inexpensive fix, I'd go with the WRV200, because after all, you've got a vpn server you're looking at using. Sure, the WRV200 supports 10 ipsec clients and 5 IPSEC vpn tunnels, but if all you're looking for is passing GRE it can do that and you have the vpn features of the router to fall back on if you need to increase the security of your vpn link.

For zywall recommendations, you'll probably need to wait for Alex (Anav) to advise you on that being he's a zywall reseller...

The version of my modem is WRT54G 1.1. Ok is their a version of the WRV200 that does have the wireless option I can connect my wrt54g for my wireless purpose. I would like a vpn router that just ethernet connection.

It appears I've forgotten to ask one question, have you forwarded port 1723 to the ip address of your 2003 vpn server? I don't know what you mean by "is there a wrv200 that has the wireless option to connect to your wrt54g," could you explain in a little more detail?

If you're looking for a plain vpn router (no wireless), the wrv200 gives you the option to turn the wireless off, so, you actually have the best of both.

Jay

P.S.,

the wrt54g is not a modem, it's ethernet technology; the linksys am200 is a modem/gateway, but this device is xdsl technology
