1 edit | Strange problem; about to give up
Lately it seems I've been losing my connection frequently on my messengers (AIM and YIM; sometimes even MSN) but, they quickly reconnect. This problem has been ongoing for almost a week. This happens anywhere from every 5 minutes to every few hours, and it's driving me up the wall. I have 2 modems I switch back and forth now and then. Westell 6100 and a 2Wire HomePortal 1100. I have disabled my software firewall and anything RELEVANT to a firewall. Problem still occurs. I really don't know what else to do. I'm pretty computer savvy, and haven't had a virus or ANY spyware/adware infections in over 2 years. You'd think from here, that there's something going on physically with my DSL service, right?
Tried 2 Wire bridged with Airlink router.
Tried Westell 6100 stand-alone.
My DSL (Ultra 1.5 mbit) is yielding good stats, as you can tell.. (Well, good for me anyway) and I don't appear to be losing sync at all. Set to Always On.

and yes, I am using a home-run. Download and upload speed are where they should be, as are the ping rates. I notice some connection stalls now and then, but nothing too severe.
All I can think up is the fact that my ethernet cable may be going bad ( Bummer, since I would have to go buy another 20 ft. cable... ) or the ethernet chip on my motherboard is fried.

Anybody else have any ideas? I don't think this would be a problem with in Bellsouth's/AT&T's infrastructure.... would it? |

1 edit | Okay guys, guess it's not the ethernet cable. I found a spare, yellow cable. Replaced it with my long one temporarily, and I'm still getting the same symptoms. Even weirder. For about 30 seconds, I could not even get through my router. Nothing would connect. I'm really fed up with this, and yet the BOTH the router AND the nic still showed a valid connection on Windows. I'm guessing the problem is local to my computer...
Attempting to try USB. Speedtests seem the same; can't really tell a difference in ethernet and USB so far (Though I do know it works horribly with Extreme 3.0 and higher) |

1 edit | Reinstalled NIC and connected router back up. More bad news. My router keeps stalling and now I can't even change the port forward settings with it...everytime I try to, the router freezes completely. Tried resetting it as well. No dice. Such a bad night for me and computers... My router is basically worthless now. Ugh. |

| Not sure if I missed it or not, but have you tried to connect the DSL Modem and NIC directly together bypassing the router and see what happens there. It is starting to sound like the router may be the problem, as they will cause the problem you describe if not setup to port forward or dmz through the connection. |

Problem is, I can't even adjust any port forwarding settings on my router anymore. Clicking on "virtual servers", which I have to access in order to adjust ports, just crashes the router completely. |
