8x8 Is In Talks Over SunRocket Accounts
By SAMAR SRIVASTAVA
July 17, 2007 4:11 p.m.

Internet phone company 8x8 Inc. is in talks to take over subscriber accounts from SunRocket, a start-up carrier that ceased operations Monday, abruptly cutting off service from some 200,000 subscribers, according to people familiar with matter.

Sherwood Partners, a California firm handling the "wind down" of SunRocket is in discussions with 8x8, which sells a phone service called Packet8, a person familiar with the talks said. He declined to elaborate what is being discussed or whether 8x8 would honor existing SunRocket contracts.

"Time is of the essence," the person said. "The risk we face is that subscribers will go elsewhere."

Other phone companies also are interested in taking over the accounts from SunRocket, of Vienna, Va., including the company that provides Internet phone service under the ViaTalk brand.

Some customers whose home phone service has been cut off are taking action on their own to switch providers. VoicePulse Inc., a New Jersey based Internet calling provider, says it has already had a few thousand former SunRocket customers sign up for its service in the past 24 hours. "They've been contacting us to port their numbers," said Voice Pulse CEO Ravi Sakaria. Mr. Sakaria declined to say how many customers VoicePulse has, but noted it is smaller than SunRocket.

Hear, Here, Time is of the essence. By the time Friday comes (when all the boxes go silent), how many will be standing waiting for the new company.

They will probably hound us via email into perpetuity.

God save us all!

So that's why there has been no announcement from SunRocket. They're trying to hold on to customers until they can make a deal to continue the service.

Which Friday would that be? The one that already passed where they ceased operations?

This coming friday. I believe it was an ex-employee that said all config files will need updating. The last time the server was alive was last friday. Config file is good for one week. So no server, the Gizmo goes dead.

I've got a gizmo that is already down. Still haven't made a decision.

Nope. I cannot go with Packet8. The blonde on the ViaTalk homepage is hotter than the blonde on Packet8's homepage. I need attention to details and obviously ViaTalk's priorities are in order.

Nice criteria, and a good one.

Well I've had SunRocket since May 2005 and if my credit card company green light's the dispute I faxed this afternoon I'll have gotten 26 months of service for $199 or $7.65 a month. I can't complain at that.

Before anyone uses this as a model for the demise of Sunrocket, I'm probably an abnormal user. I use 200 minutes a month. I just liked the convenience. They likely still made money off of me.

Looks like Packet 8 charges an add'l $1.99 on top of monthly fee, for E911, screw that.

Additional Packet8 Features
Features not included with the monthly service fee

Enhanced 911
Packet8 "Enhanced" 911 (E911), a government mandated service, automatically routes calls and computer-based "screen pops" of caller information to emergency personnel at local Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs). Because Packet8's E911 call data is routed as emergency traffic and is accompanied by E911 caller information, callers receive the same response from emergency personnel that they are accustomed to receiving from legacy, switched telecommunications 911 services provided by traditional telephone carriers. My cell phone charges that as well... Everyone charges for 911. It's just that some bury the cost in their fee while others itemize it. Maybe Sunrocket didn't charge for 911 but look where they are now.

I was unclear, sorry. It looks like they charge $24 more a year than ViaTalk, despite advertising the same price...screw that.

FINALLY, AP has come out with the story, 5 Days after BBR knew what was happening!

No mention of the AOL pigeons that raped the company, AP puts the blames on slower growth than the other VOIP companies

Yuck! P8 was the 1st VOIP service I tried. No thank you-Never again! I just signed up for VT over the weekend (just in time!). My other 1/2 has had it here in the office for a year with no problems. My line is still alive in Cincinnati, but VM is gone. Got all invoices/account management pages printed to PDF for porting numbers over to VT. Hope VT ports as fast as possible to avoid dead line.
