| Innomedia Gizmo + Grand Central + Gizmo Project = Free Phone
As a former SR customer, I've been trying to figure out a way to get cheap phone calls. Well, I think I've figured it out.
First, I signed up for the Gizmo Project at »www.gizmoproject.com, which is free. That gives you a SIP account, which is the protocol VOIP phones use. Basically, it allows you to chat with other online instant messengers, but it also has SIP capabilities.
Then, I configured my gizmo with the Gizmo Project servers since the gizmo uses the SIP protocol to communicate. »support.gizmoproject.com/index.p···ls&_i=88
Then, I configured Grand Central to forward all my calls to my Gizmo Project account. »blog.grandcentral.com/?p=72
Then, I configured my Sunrocket account to forward all calls to my Grand Central number.
Now, when people call either my old Sunrocket number or my new Grand Central number, it goes to my gizmo, which rings my normal home phone. All incoming calls are free.
If I want to make an outgoing call, I can either pay $0.019 per minute, or I can do it for free (only during Grand Central's beta period) by going to my Grand Central account and adding someone to my address book and clicking the "call" button. This makes Grand Central call the person and calls my phone to connect the two, so it counts as an incoming call. So, I can make all outgoing calls for free. |

Free World Dialup doesn't allow you to receive or call normal phones, at least not yet. They plan on offering FWDout and FWD in for a fee in the future.

It seems to work really well so far. The sound quality on my normal phone sounds better than Sunrocket did.
I think this may be the best value if you dial out less than 500 mins/month (if you dial out at 1.9 cents/min). That comes to about $114/year or a little less than $10/month. You get unlimited incoming calls. If you make less calls than that, you just pay for what you actually use.
I think I'm still going to get something like ViaTalk though, because my wife wants "unlimited" phone calls, even though I don't think she makes more than 500 mins in outgoing calls. |

| reply to agc I really wish GrandCentral worked with other SIP providers in addition to GizmoProject. As it stands they can forward to POTS, to a GizmoProject number, and that's it.
By the way, I'm pretty sure all plans for FWDout and FWDin are canceled. Jeff Pulver was actually by here a few weeks ago looking for ideas to "monetize" FWD.

Also, I got an email from Jeff pulver/FWD YESTERDAY soliciting a relaunch of FWD. |

| reply to agc I got this "mostly" working with an Innomedia gizmo. I was able to call my GrandCentral number, which correctly called Gizmo, which correctly rang my phone via SIP.
However - it only did it once! Everytime after, it insists on dialing only the softphone and won't ring the phone connected to the innomedia. I'm stumped why it worked briefly, and then stopped.
If I turn off the softphone completely, I just eventually get routed to voicemail - still no ring |

| You tell GrandCentral to call your Gizmo number. Then you tell SunRocket to forward all your calls to your GrandCentral number. So anyone who calls your SunRocket number will be forwarded to your GrandCentral number, which will forward to Gizmo.
All quite slick if I could keep it working longer than for one call... |

| reply to pug_ster I have the 6328-2Re Innomedia gizmo. The settings should be similar with any device, I think. You just need to get the SIP proxy, username, and password correct. I'm not familiar with the AC-211, but you may be able to find someone else that's been able to use it for another service and change the server settings to match those of the Gizmo Project settings. |

I am new to them and think they are great... if you have any insights, please do enlighten.. Nothing much I guess -- the only thing that ever bothered me was their pretending to be open source and/or free when they're not. Ideally I'd rather go with a full service provider who also has SIP support, be able to use 3rd party and/or free DIDs from multiple providers, etc. The current GrandCentral situation (unless someone knows differently) means the ONLY way to pick up GrandCentral calls from an ATA-connected phone is to pay GizmoProject for the privilege.

Havent paid one cent for the account. What are you talking about?
GizmoProject does offer GizmoIn DID numbers for purchase. And they offer GizmoOut credits for sale. If you dont want them and use only the gizmoproject id or number, you pay NOTHING.
