The Bloor viaduct had a suicide every 3 weeks and those were largely unreported as well. That's why they put up the big barriers a few years ago. Lots of suicides and attempted suicides on the TTC as well.

Shaner, as I said, it is standard procedure anywhere to not report public suicides to discourage copycats. There is a reason why the press no longer count the number of jumpers off the Golden Gate Bridge.
As for the umbrella...maybe it was a London Fog umbrella...anyway, people should note that the TTC track level is a good 4-5 feet deep. Don't think you can just jump down and pop back onto the platform.

i use the ttc every day of the week but not affected by this delay. these types of events are common but we seldom hear about it as a ttc rider. a few years ago, i was going to work and the train halted right before entering lawrence station on the yonge/yellow line. we waited for about 15 minutes and then told to leave the train. as we were being evacuated, we saw man lying on the platform, lifeless to me and i work in health care with blood running down his face and from his ear. as we walked up, the ttc were talking with police about how he had jumped in front of the train. it delayed and closed eventually closed the line for hours. yet, no mention of it was made on the public address system or on the news, i was checking for it. i later found out and because of my job that such events go unreported and as mentioned here. what is/are the reason(s) why these events are not reported? |

what if he wanted to retrieve the umbrella because he thought it may cause a problem with the subway system (electrical short, derailment or damage to a rail car if it gets caught in some hoses or wires and damages them).
the "punishment" could simply be that the TTC could "educate" him on safety on the subway systems by having a spokesperson give him a short tour of the lines, and info on how everything works.

Yeah, I can appreciate that. Just like "incidents" on the TTC subway aren't reported either.
donoreo: You are correct, it was on 680 News but was referred to as "an event". The only way I knew it was pretty serious was seeing the police tape running across Leslie at Commerce Valley.

It is standard policy for media outlets to not report suicidal jumpers (unless they're famous, of course), lest they encourage others to do the same.

No, I don't mean sad we don't to claim our theoretical accident causing tax as mentioned above, sad that he could vanish and no one would notice.

LOL...he might like that considering his latest shut down on the tax vote.
Could be tough to prove sometimes. There's much to consider in terms of a penalty/tax, etc.
Maybe you take his umbrella , and make him wear a sign for a morning in the station he messed up in. "I held you all up due to my stupidity".

I have these same thoughts each time I get held up in traffic because of an incident. Not for TTC, but cost to everyone held up, late deliveries etc. Lets impose an accident tax. Get David Miller on the phone |
