Hey tired_man, the delay vary greatly from an install to another. For reference count about 7 business days for a complete install. Transfer are much faster (24-48hrs).

No worries about the quality of our products.

wrawrat: Videotron has 5 regions that can be activated. Currently we are deserving the full Montreal area (south shore, laval, downtown etc..). Activating other area is in our expansion plans. I can't say when exactly but it is definitely something that will be considered in a few months.

Nous n'avons pas de numero dans la region de Laval (450), uniquement des numeros (514).

Depuis plus de 7 annees nous avons offert des services illimité de qualite. Notre offre illimitee demeurera illimitee aussi longtemps que nous serons en mesure de le faire. Il n'y a aucune inquietude a ce faire a ce sujet pour l'instant. Il y a aucun contrat requis pour le service par cable a linstant.

Le SB5100 a une excellente historique. La nouvelle version le SB5101 utilise un chipset Broadcom different. En terme de vitesse et de capacite les deux sont pareils. Le SB5120 que nous vendons utilise le chipset Texas Instrument.

Le SB5100 ferait un excellent modem.

The problem with the Arris modem is that Videotron prohibit their use outside their internal userbase. When we place an order we need to provide a serial and MAC. Hey monteverdi, the service is available to all customers that already has videotron services. If you are transfering the install is also really cheaper (25$ vs 90$) than a fresh new install. The extreme (10 Mbits) is not offered, only the 7 Mbits Unlimited.

Let me know if you need more informations.

Rickkins: Yes, SpeedPhone (14,95$/month) on top of your cable services. You will have to buy an ATA in order to use SpeedPhone services. We recommand the sipura SPA-1001 or our corded sip phones.

But I did get higher than that just downloading stuff on the web. Maybe IE7 is not really accurate but I have seen as high as 830 KB/sec and this was not a burst, it was maintained for a few minutes.

For those saying electronicbox is pricier than the others all I have to answer is: you pay for what you get!!

You have to ask yourself, how much would a business line cost me... the company I work for has 2 offices in the Montreal area and they have dedicated DSL lines. They have issue with their line more often than I do... and by a fair margin as well I might add. You can pretty much compare it to a dedicated business line from my own experience. The only difference is you won't get reverse lookup with a dynamic IP. But I'm pretty sure that something can be done if you want to buy static IP.
I have been with videotron, bell, istop and a few others companies so electronicbox is not my first ISP either.

Yes, if you have low usage, $40 isn't a bad deal for 7mbit. Compared to dry DSL, it's actually more or less the same price, with probably faster speed for most people. But when you start getting into the 100GB/mth or more range of bandwidth usage, that $30 bandwidth cap is painful.

As a student about to move away from home (Next week!), I have to take into consideration my high usage (which varies, sometimes 60GB/mth, sometimes 160GB/mth), and what I can afford. It's hard to justify $65 or $70/mth when I can get a decent connection for about half that. It's just a matter of cost! I mean, the building provides free wifi (a Videotron business line shared among hundreds of people), but since average speeds there seem to be 500kbit to 1mbit and it's NAT'd, I have to draw the line somewhere :P

Although, I should say that even though I'm currently all the way out in Pointe-Claire, with low population densities and all, I still have no trouble syncing at 5mbit. I know a lot of people have trouble with that, but sometimes the areas you think least likely have good sync speeds ;)

But, I like competition. I like options, even if I don't take advantage of them. I sincerely hope that you're able someday to negotiate a deal with Videotron that reduces their restrictions. And I do hope your service is very successful, because it's going to do good things for the Quebec/Montreal Internet markets!

Guspaz: Normal, videotron network is not built like bell for wholesellers. Even if this is our network and our switches the bandwidth caps is pre-defined. Like videotron customers, you can't pay higher than 30$ over the bandwidth caps profile set for everyone (videotron and wholesellers). Our price is 39,95$/month for 20/10G. Depending on your network usage, dsl might or not be a better bang for the buck.

P.S. the speed is 7 Mbits / 820 Kbits. Dsl is 'up to' 5 Mbits. Lots of people here are still on profiles at 3 Mbits or even less.

I have been connected from the office in vpn client all day long and I must say that many little things I normally do would just get done quicker with cable.

Here is an exemple, I usually open my vpn connection and then I rdp to my vista workstation. From the RDP session, I often fire up IE7 for web browsing and I must say that websurfing from an rdp session over dsl was much more painful. I do not think bandwidth is in question here, probably more latency related. But still, the speed increase was very noticeable...

Of course, fetching software was a tad quicker as well. Through the vpn I use to get average 75k/sec but on cable I get 100k/sec.

So that's it for now... I might be able to provide more interesting info after a little while. The modem is plugged in and everything works as it should.
I have to say that the bandwidth increase is very nice.

The only thing I could see as a problem for the other users is that I didn't get any dns just an ip and gateway.
I don't really care since I have a my own dns server but it would be useful for others.

I'm always plugged in vpn client(from the office) all day long so I'll be able to somewhat test the stability of the line during the next coming days.

When a cable modem is turned on, it requests its configuration. The configuration include amongst things, the allowed speeds, and various filters and many parameters that are "secure" (cannot be set by the customer) as part of the DOCSIS standard.

However, in the case of the cable modem I had/have, Videotron told me that they were perfectly capable of remotely upgrading its firmware without user knowing it or user intervention.

Electronicbox has a direct link with Videotron into which all subscribers of Videotron cable internet service pass through on a dedicated VLAN. Electronicbox IP addresses are dynamically assigned by the Videotron DHCP servers and then routed from the Videotron network through our VLAN to meet the gateways to the public domain found in our core.

We buy modems directly from authorized distributors but videotron is giving a list of allowed models that will work on their network. It means you will have access to unlocked models. Like i stated, it is not like DSL that you can buy any g.dmt modems and be ready to surf.
A few known facts: no ARRIS for resellers (actually, no 3rd party cable for phone customers), unlocked modems will be updated with videotron locked-firmware, and no static IP in sight anytime soon.

If there is a problems everything is done through Electronic Box support center. We are dealing directly with Videotron helpdesk with trouble tickets. You don't have to deal with the 'drones'.

When i say we activate in batch it means Videotron is restricting access to a limited list of devices. We need to send them the informations regarding our modems so they can allow them in their network to exchange data with the CMTS. If you were already a customer of videotron in the past and own a cable modem sold by videotron we might be able to reactivate it since it was pre-accepted before in their list. At this stage the whole process is pretty new to us and informations are not always clear with videotron.

So, if there is a problem, I call you and then have to call videotron ? At that stage, do we the customers deal with the entry level drones at Videotron ? Or do we get a boost to speak to some of the few folks who actually know how things work there ?

When you say you have to activate the modems in batch, if I were to give you the cable ethernet address of my modem, couldn't you activate it ?

If I would have to buy your modems, are those modems "videotron" modems you just resell, or do you get them directly from a distributor/motorola ? If you signup on Cable 7 Mbits with Electronic Box you don't have to deal with videotron at all unless there is a trouble ticket or for the initial installation.

IPs are part of our own pool.

I have to verify for the DHCP. I will get back to you.

Actually we are selling the Motorola modems. We have to activate them in batch so it is not like DSL that you can buy any modem and it is plug and play. It has to be configured in the CMTS of the node. We plan to offer different modem soon to give our customer a choice of quality modems.

Probably but i have to double check on this one.

schlouf: As far as i know, keeping static ip won't be possible since it is using a different network. Like most of the service, when you change provider you get assigned a static or dynamic ip from your new provider pool. About cable modem, i think videotron is leasing their modem with their packages. With us you can own one for 75$ (Motorola). We always offer 10% of on all prepaid account and would be pleased to deal something with our longtime customers who would like to switch. For the moment the only speed we provide is the 7M with a cap or unlimited.
