 1 edit | [DW4000] Earthlink Software changes... Earthlink called (via an automated land line caller) advising that they would be making software changes on 7/18/2007. They further advised that I should run WebSetup if I should have any problems after the 18th. Did that!
Mail was touch and go for a few hours, but now seems to be working alright, but I am having problems with the browser... very, very slow, takes minutes to change a page. I wasn't having any problem of this type before the 18th. Anyone else running through EarthLink and, if so, any problems similar to mine? RSL has also dropped from low 80's to 73... -- Ron at savillehill, DW4000 via Direcway 4.2.1.10 Service Pack C1, G11 1410MHz Horiz 91W (GW 205.177.62.57), RSL 88-90, ACP 69, WinXP Pro, Intel Pentium D 3GHz, 2GB ram, NIS2006, ptp ICS cross-over net with WinXP Home, IE6.0. | grohgregDunno. Ask The Chief join:2001-07-05 Dawson Springs, KY | Your sig line says v4.2.1.10/SP-C1. I'm pretty sure that's about at least a 3 year old update. If memory serves, v4.2.1 came out around the end of '03, and the service pack about six months later.

But like you said,email was a hit or miss,and page loading was real slow.Finally I went to bed and tried it again this morning,first it was extremely fast and after a couple of different web sites,it started to crawl again,so I came on to work. Today continues with hit or miss performance here... I don't completely understand what EarthLink can to from their end to screw things up like they have, but something is going on. All they suggested with the auto telephone call was to rerun Web Setup... I did that. No help.
I will try to harass EarthLink tomorrow morning, but the probability of the New Delhi connection being of any help is low. -- Ron at savillehill, DW4000 via Direcway 4.2.1.10 Service Pack C1, G11 1410MHz Horiz 91W (GW 205.177.62.57), RSL 88-90, ACP 69, WinXP Pro, Intel Pentium D 3GHz, 2GB ram, NIS2006, ptp ICS cross-over net with WinXP Home, IE6.0. Check the dates - and the contents, perhaps you'll notice something different inside PARAMRSP (I think that's what it was called). Does your system status reflect the same transponder and gateway assignments as before?
//greg// | |  | reply to savillehill Good morning...
EarthLink (New Delhi) sez that the software changes they auto called about were not as easily implemented as they thought. They expect continuing problems until AM EST 24 July 2007.
Regards, | | | reply to grohgreg My IP address and gateway did change in system info. Transponder and sat. stayed the same.I am getting the page cant be displayed,cant find server or dns error. They've been herding all PC-based systems into one gateway on one transponder on each satellite. In the case of Earthlink, you were already on 1410H - but they put you on a gateway for "legacy" systems. I was on G11/1370H for years. Reformatted my HDD last August > reinstalled Direcway > ran WebSetup > found myself on 1410H and DNS server 66.82.10.48 > things went downhill from there.
It was almost as if they were inserting bugs and intentionally causing poor performance, just to get us old-timers to upgrade. Nine months of aggravation on 1410H finally pushed me over the edge, I bit the bullet and upgraded in May.
Two things: first, WebSetup wipes out most TCP/IP tweaks. If you used DrTCP (or similar), you'll have to re-enter the changes. Second, WebSetup doesn't usually put the DNS address into your TCP/IP properties. After WebSetup, I typically found the check mark in front of "Automatically". You have to actually go into TCP/IP Properties and enter the DNS server address manually in the "Use This" box.

My adapter IP address and gateway did indeed change,and ZAP shows my network IP/submask as new and its 10.70.1.x and the direcway info shows it as being 10.70.1.xxx. Two less numbers in ZAP than in direcway,unless ZAP is just showing a range. Seems like before it had the whole IP address listed. Cant really remember.

They had me activate itu, change server address in registry 3 times. Told me last Thursday that Hughes was going to change my transponder to 1570, to re-run web setup for the umpteenth time. After running web setup, my IP Address changed, but still on 1410. I tried the link supplied by Greg for the free HN7000s modem, but learned that this is for Hughes customers only. I phoned EL to inquire if they had the free modem deal. They stated that there was nothing wrong with my modem, so I was not eligible. Last conversation I had with EL, they said it should be fixed in 24 hours. Website: »WmLarryPowell.com | | 1 edit | EarthLink and Hughes must have figured out how to drive the old DW4000 modems onto the trash heap... EL will not upgrade a modem... they're solution is to terminate the existing service and avail yourself of a new modem via a complete new system...
When I re-ran Web Setup, my gateway had changed, although I'm still on G11/1410. I spoke with New Delhi, nothing is working reliably today and I don't have high hopes that they will have it back up and running by tomorrow, as promised.
Sounds like $299.98 is the price of staying in the game using HughesNet... Looking at the "Pro" plan. That is, if I can get a look at the Service Agreement to review (can't get it to download this morning). Too bad I didn't have a choice between Hughes and EL when I originally signed up back in 2001. 2 edits | reply to savillehill Check the stickied "for Sale" thread. You might be able to pick up somebody's DW 6/7000 modems and use them with your dish. No contact; no huge upfront equipment costs; probably have to change to hughesnet as your provider as I don't think E'link supports BYO equipment. | | 1 edit | Well, it's up and running this a.m., or should I say crawling.
