[OOL] Slight bump in speeds?

Well I'm out on the North Fork of LI, and we had been without cable for all day this past Wednesday (due to rains) and now that we're finally back on, I've noticed a slight bump of speed with my modem. Unfortunately I only get 1.2MBps using the old OOL ftp speed test, but here's what my DLINK DCM-202 is reporting:

Class ID 1
Max Downstream Rate (bps) 16500000
Max Upstream Rate (bps) 2000000

So does that mean I am now 16.5/2? I was almost positive that before this outage, the downstream was 15000000.

It probably is a measurement anomaly. The best way to find out what you are provisioned at is to ask the modem by running DOCSDIAG/ This will report what your provisioned up and down speeds are set to.

Have you tried any of the speed testers? What are you getting on those sites?

Re: [OOL] Slight bump in speeds?

I don't think the line down my road is the best of quality (underground, installed mid-1980s and not touched since), but the line to the house was just replaced last summer. Seemed download speed dropped to 1.20MB/sec and hasn't moved since.

I was messing with the OOL FTP test and got 1.20 MB/sec, but obviously that's still a little ways under the cap. So, the bump did nothing for me.

FYI, the phone line was layed at the same time, and we have a noticeable hum on it, but Verizon doesn't want to do anything about it...so I would imagine the line quality down the road could be better.

It does indeed look like they have raised the cap on the 15/2 to 16.5/2:

At least that will bring results closer to their advertised rates, provided the connection is solid to begin with.

You need to power off your modem, wait a minute or so, and then power it up to see what you are provisioned at. These settings are not automatic but need to be reloaded at handshake time. I am not saying that they are not going to roll out a higher BOOST Speed but only that when/if they do you will not see it without doing a reboot. The only time that I think it will automatic update is when they push new microcode, do a node split or cap you (all of what trigger a automatic reboot and thus a reload of the settings).

Try rebooting the Modem (needed to get new/updated settings). This looks like there was something to that 15/5 speedbump although it is improved download not improved upload speeds.

Im not in FIOS territory, and the change required a reboot -- similar to the original poster though, I'm on the east end of LI.

We'll know when the roll-out is supposedly completed when CV updates the Products Speed Listing on their Web Site, issues a press release, and/or updates the Speed Text page (although it took a long time for them to fix that page to actually show a 5Mbs bar [as opposed to a 2Mbs bar] for BOOST users).

Do not forget that even after your area/node has been speed-bumped that, unless they force a reboot, you will need to manually reboot by downing a power-off/power-on of the modem to get the new speed settings downloaded into the modem.

This is good news. Since i get 13.5 now, a raise in the cap by 1.5 means that i will actually get a full 15mbps. Cool!

So perhaps my friend was right after all and there are further bumps in speed coming.. .

I'm still 30/5 FWIW, and I'm in a FIOS territory as well now, Roslyn.

Awesome!

It seems to me that your download is uncapped (as said above) or in other words it is now the node's hard cap. If you look at some of the other entries, you'll notice the following few entries which define the speed of your downstream interface (before any hard cap is applied):

Anyone care to comment? Is this likely to spread to non-FIOS areas? And hey, that 10mbit upgrade may still be coming after all. :)

Also, would it be possible for me to check out the -vvv (highly verbose) output? If you like, you can sanitize it, or perhaps just share it with me in email.

Thanks! And hey, congrats!
Question: Was your modem out or did you just reboot it and find this one day? I've been resetting regularly and still same ol'.

Re: [OOL] Slight bump in speeds?

It seems that way:

docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.427.1 = [Gauge32] 5000000
docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.427.2 = [Gauge32] 5000000
docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.427.3 = [Gauge32] 5000000
docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.428.1 = [Gauge32] 0
docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.428.2 = [Gauge32] 0
docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.428.3 = [Gauge32] 0

Also, just ran another speedtest and to see if the results were repeatable. This time was better:

I also did a real world test. Downloaded an 800 mB zip file from my web site host using FlashGet. 5 minutes and 20 seconds. Whew.

Re: [OOL] Slight bump in speeds?

The thing that baffles me is why CV would keep something like this a secret? Why not announce they're doing it, get some positive publicity and goodwill, and maybe sell some more Boost packages?

And assuming it's not a mistake that will be corrected when someone notices and goes ooops....why wouldn't they apply the same re-provision to all Boost customers?

As usual, CV moves in mysteries ways.

The only reason why you guys know about it is because of this website. So just be patient

Because you cant sell "best effort" to non-IT people. Joe six pack will call in into CS and demand to know the speed he is paying for, no "best effort" "lawyer speak". Or someone will call in and say "its not fast enough, you promised unlimited".

hmm I am at home and I cant do it for the cablemodem at work because we have a firewall that blocks docsdiag and I cant directly connect to the modem without interupting the users.

I will try to get one later for my house modem.

Can someone perhaps explain my DOCSISDIAG results to me as I see it's different from most if not all of the users'?

Also what exactly is this:

if High Speed.1 = 100 Mbps
if High Speed.2 = 0 Mbps
if High Speed.3 = 43 Mbps
if High Speed.4 = 10 Mbps
if High Speed.5 = 12 Mbps
if High Speed.16 = 0 Mbps

TIA,

Very interesting. I guess they really are testing something for perhaps a future upgrade. Lets all hope so huh? ;)

I, for one.. have 15/2 with IO & OV and still nothing has changed.

I did do a modem reset about 30 minutes ago.

Your Docsdiag is quite average, showing the settings of 15mbit down and 2mbit up as your modem's caps. When you get the upgrade, the 15,000,000's will change to 16,500,000.

Your docsdiag profile differs from the people that have posted in this thread who are mostly BOOST users.

For example, notice Ken Peterson See Profile's profile. Very similar to yours but has been upgraded to 16,500,000 bps downstream instead of the old 15,000,000 bps.

Let's take a look at the interfaces printout in it's long form:

---
---

Now we can easily decipher the interfaces:

Interface 1 is the Ethernet port. It's a 10/100mbit port, and hence it's maximum throughput is 100,000,000 bits per second.

Interface 2 is the CATV MAC interface [without an extended long explanation, let's just say cable modems need this and the packetcable embedded interface to work :) ]

Interface 3 is the total capacity of the downstream channel the modem is on - The overall Cable [RF] Downstream interface, and it's maximum bps rate is 42,884,296 bits per second. The speed depends on the DOCSIS level and level of Quadrature Amplitude Modulation [QAM].

Interface 4 is the total capacity of the upstream channel the modem is on. The overall Cable [RF] Upstream interface speed depends on the DOCSIS level and TDMA or QPSK being employed.

Interface 5 is your USB port, which has a max speed of 12megabits per second. It's initialized (provisioned) even if it isn't being used.

Interface 16 is the Packetcable Embedded Interface, another interface needed to make a cable modem work.

My modem seems to print the entire bit rate, while yours rounds off (as in the case of the downstream overall max). Just ignore that.

Below is a small chart of the capabilities of each DOCSIS level / highest level of QAM assumed.

Synchronization speed (Usable speed)

DOCSIS Downstream Upstream
1.x 42.88 (38) Mbit/s 10.24 (9) Mbit/s
Euro 57.20 (51) Mbit/s 10.24 (9) Mbit/s
2.0 42.88 (38) Mbit/s 30.72 (27) Mbit/s
3.0 +480 Mbit/s +120 Mbit/s

Re: [OOL] Slight bump in speeds?

Wow, thanks for the information man. Clears all of it up for me.

So looks like DOCSIS 1 & 2 don't have that much difference besides the upstream.

DOCSIS 3 should be great. I'm optimistic about Cablevision.

Thanks again!

I am also getting all zeros with boost in the docsdiag test and getting over 30mbit down on the OOL speedtest. Here is what I get from the BBR test:

Oh please, shoot me now. More "OOL SUCKS OOL SUCKS OOL SUCKS". Do us a favor please and put a lid on it. YES, it's a free country and you can post as you wish, YES, I know I don't have to read your rants, but it's wearing rather thin. You have lost your credibility with all the negative posts.

This does not mean you are a bad person...

I dont care what anyone thinks and i will post it if i feel it needs to. My speeds were fixed but now its been a few days of slow speeds again. Look at this graph i made and it shows what speeds i was getting to OOL for about 25 minutes and you see it sucks.

Well, I upgraded to Boost -- and also upgraded my router since my old WRT54G v2 running DD-WRT was topping out around 24Mbps..

So this is what I'm seeing now -- with the Buffalo WHR-G125 running DD-WRT firmware.. Great speeds, and thats a great router for anyone looking for a Boost compatible wireless router -- and CHEAP -- right now its $24.99 after $20 in rebates at Circuit City.

I'm also seeing no limit on download on Boost config:

Are you saying the WRT54G can't support Boost speeds?

Re: [OOL] Slight bump in speeds?

I think it depends on what version you have. I have the WRT-54G V3 and i cant get over 24 mb down with that router.

Re: [OOL] Slight bump in speeds?

Some can and some can but mine is ok for Boost at just under 25 mb while my D-Link DGL-4300 can do over 30 mb easy.
