| [HN7000S] Hughes speed test versus Dslreports - Differences
After reading the post about Hughes vs. testmy.net speed differences, I decided to ask this (possibly stupid question.)
I'm a neophyte when it comes to Speed Test understanding, so please bear with me.
(In fact, I'm still trying to understand what my new tests from testmy.net mean???)
Here my Speed tests this afternoon: Hughes: 1208 Down - 193 Up
Just seconds later . . . Dslreports: 735 Down - 172 Up. Why the MAJOR difference?

1 edit | Those two examples are not unusual considering satellite internet is shared bandwidth. Matter of fact, it's not unusual to get two consecutive test results like that from the SAME test server.
Speed test sites which simply calculate on a data over time basis will reflect satellite speeds as slower than actual. It's a factor of latency. Others don't have algorithms which take into consideration the data compression types used by satellite internet providers.
If/when requesting Hughes tech support assistance relative to connection speed (or lack of), they will not accept speed test results from any site other than their own. So why bother?
Which HughesNet plan are you paying for by the way?

By the By - I repeated that test - Hughes vs Dslreports several times yesterday (again, seconds apart.) Each time producing almost the same results - Hughes very high and Dslreports running about 60% of the Hughes figures.
I almost NEVER talk to India when I don't have to! The only time in the recent past was when I was DOA for a long time period. They wasted my time trying to 'fix' the problem for almost an hour and finally discovered I'd been FAP'd. "Try again in 24 hours."
I hadn't even realized they'd changed the FAP rules!
I started out with DW4000 in 2002 until DW6000 came along. I'm changed to DW7000S two months ago for $79.99 because of that FAP. What exactly they call that plan, I don't know???
Thanks for your reply! |

| What speed test sites? Probably none. This one »/speedtest?loc=9 used to be tweaked to cope with the Hughes compression algorithm. But I don't know that to be a fact anymore. If you do pick one, it should be as close to your NOC as possible. That helps eliminate terrestrial influences on the speed test results. Otherwise, just stick with Hughes; »satspeedtest.hughesnet.com/cgi/launch2.cgi Whatever your choice though, just pick ONE and establish a performance baseline. By jumping to half a dozen speed test sites all over the map, you're just confusing the issue. Pick one and stick with it. If/when your performance then starts to deviate from the baseline, you'll be better prepared to deal with tech support.
The name of the $79.99 plan is ProPlus

| reply to ctutt said by ctutt :What is FAP? FAP stands for "Fair Access Policy." I looked for the information on the Hughes Customer Care site but could no longer find it. A Google search though, turned up this explanation - Be aware!

1 edit | reply to berrybl Hmmmm, I wonder why I dont have that problem. There is a difference with upload speeds because of compression on all but testmy but the download speeds are always neck in neck on what is reported. I am not claiming anyone to be right or wrong, just wondering why it isn't that way for me.
July 23rd, 09:50AM - 943/274 kbps-----Hughes result
Well for whatever reason my copy and paste didnt work but this sight got 1172 down and 293 up and testmy got 1143 down and 273 up. Dont have time right now to give the paste another shot after retesting but I can if needed later today. HughesNet small buissness $99 package / AMC9,83west/990Mhz./.98 dish/2 watt radio/HN7000s modem/ 4 computers on a linksy's wired network |
