These have been around since at least 2002 which was the first I heard of them. There are some that can even crawl in under your door.

@kpatz. I imagine a couple ornery cats would work out better than a fly swatter- sort of like a furry IDS.

Let's get some air-to-air combat going.

This was a plot device in an episode of Max Headroom in 1987 or 1988. Nice to see that Harvard and DARPA are finally catching up to 20-year-old bad scifi TV.

The Fifth Element (Bruce Willis movie) featured a spy bug (like a cockroach).

The problem with devices like these is the slightest gust of wind comes along and they crash. They still have a long way to go to get anything that can be used in a real world environment.

My dog hunts, attacks, and eats flies. Will robotic flies upset her digestive system? Will they pass normally? Will they spring back to life from backyard piles? So many questions.

Sure, that'll work..

I don't know about it upsetting her digestive system (the FDA is debating it's jurisdiction over the matter) but it does play havoc with the transmitter. According to the operators manual, any conversations it picks up from the time it enters the lower digestive system will have to be manually retrieved after it exits the unit.
