MagicJack works through the house wiring, first disconnected and taped at the box outside of the house so you don't fry the equiqment.

For those of us who aren't too knowledgeable about telephone networking, can you give some more detail about how they make money from the gateways?

I assume every voip outfit is collecting money from gateways that it uses and that the amount of money collected is in proportion to the number of calls that it handles.

How does the number of gateways make a difference? Is it difficult to sign up a gateway to handle your calls? Expensive? Is magicjack hoping to give away the service and undercut everyone else and drive them out of business and sign up most of the gateways? What are they up to? Not quite, IMHO. For one thing, it uses your computer and the computer must be left on for the entire time one wants to receive calls. Another is the inertia of many folks to change providers if they are perfectly happy with what they have, and the savings would be only $10 to $20 per month. Also, features play a big role and many want caller ID, call waiting, ACR, Do Not Disturb, filters, etc. A lot of folks want all the phones in the house to work, not having to go to the computer to make and receive calls. If MJ cannot be plugged into the house wiring, some won't go for it.

At the price, MJ is an interesting option, but I don't think it's a VOIP killer. I've been reading the MJ forums and think the software doesn't scan your calls or computer. It just posts the ads which only show up on their software, and not anywhere else on computer.
