Can't connect although all seems AOK

I've been using C90 modem for several years with no problems. Suddenly, I can't connect to the internet. All seems OK. I've turned moden off and turned it back on. All the power, link, and ready lights, are all steady greem. Verizon says my line tests OK, but I have no connection. We did have some high temps in New York the day it stopped and I think that the utility voltage may have fluctuated. Maybe the modem got screwed up in some way?? How can I re-initialize it with my verizon user name and password? I don't have any disks. Maybe that will help. Any other thoughts. Thanks. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. Luckily, I found a neighbor's wireless connection that I can piggyback on to for now.

Do you have a secondary modem around that you can try to connect and if so, narrow it down to the modem? A friends modem recently did the same thing after a lightening strike hit her phone line. Knocked the phone dead, and verizon came out and fixed it. Only later did we find out that the modem synched but didn't pass a connection. So IMO it's important to narrow it down to if its a modem problem. If you're on wireless, then obviously your wireless adapter is working, but have you checked your NIC to make sure that didn't blot out on yah? Have you tried diff jack or at the NID? Follow up, plenty of help here, Best, Penewah

If you are using a ADSL modem (not modem/router combo) either an external router or PC needs to maintain PPPoE connection (assuming you are in a PPPoE area).

Are you using a router? What is the status of the PPPoE connection?

Thanks for your replys. I have no problem accessing my wireless router (Dell 2300) either by ethernet cable or wirelessly but there is no further connection through the Verizon modem to the internet. I tried connecting direct to the modem with an ethernet cable and I still had no connection. Perhaps I should try accessing the modem setup (if I can) and reset my password, etc.

Second reply. I could borrow another verizon modem from my wife's office and see if that works. I'm a little nervous I could screw up its settings though. What do I change, just username and password?

I can't get on the modem even with a direct ethernet connection and entering 192.168.1.1 in my browser. NEtwork connections is showing "limited or no connectivity." It seems a good chance my modem is kaput, agreed?

Since DHCP is turned off in the modem, you have to assign a temporary static IP.

how do you do that?

In Control Panel, choose Networking. Select your LAN Connection, right click and select Properties. Double click Internet Protocol(TCP/IP), select Use The Following IP Address, and put in 192.168.1.2, with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0, and 192.168.1.1 for the Default Gateway.

edit:
July 24th, @08:55AM

I set the static IP as suggested. Now, I can ping 192.168.1.2, but not 192.168.1.1. If I enter the IPs in the address bar I get nowhere. It's strange. My ethernet cable shows a light and "Network Connections" says connected. The modem has all the right lights on (except for activity) and I can't connect to the modem. When I input 192.168.1.1, I get a single blink of the activity light, but that's it. Is my modem fried?

Exactly which model modem do you have, C90-?????

it sounds like you're using the old white westell modem. Once you connect it, you will get the "limited or no connectivity" - it's not a problem. But then you need to create a connectoid in XP and connect that way. When you were in your Dell router, did you check what the status was and what IP you were getting?

thanks. It is an old white westell modem (5 years old). I'll check on the IP when I get home. I'm pretty sure that I connected on 192.168.1.1 before starting to have problems, however.

Now I really don't know what's going on. I set up a new broadband connection (is that a connectoid) called verizon and I manually configured it with my user name and password and it works!! However, I still can't get into the Westell modem to reset the password etc. I ran the ipconfig command and it's showing an IP address of 70.18.29.66, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255, and a default gateway of 70.18.29.66. I tried all these IPs in my browser along with 192.168.1.1 and nothing happens. Does anyone know what's going on?

That's why you can't access the modem page. There is none. This is a "dumb" modem, and is bridge only. There is nothing to change. Double check your router settings. If the modem works with a direct connection to the pc and using PPPoE dialer, your issue is most likely in the router.

Thanks everybody. I found that my dell 2300 wireless router had somehow changed settings from PPOe to Cable. All is back up and in good shape.
