1 edit | Real or false positive in today's Ad-Aware update? Full scan yesterday was squeaky clean and I haven't been anywhere unfamiliar since.
Did a quick smart scan with the update out of habit and it found two TAC 8 level problems. Each directed me to this same page for more info: »www.lavasoft.com/support/securit···ware.CDN
I have no clue what the words on the page mean and wonder if I made a mistake by fixing the items without finding out first. |

Name GamePremium join:2002-07-07 North Myrtle Beach, SC kudos:6 | reply to onDvine Description 3721 Chinese Keywords, also known as CNSMin or Adware.CDN, is keyword-lookup provider that takes over the search feature of IE's address bar. It is aimed at providing keywords using Chinese characters.
Category Description A Browser Plug-in is a software module that is attached to the browser, usually Internet Explorer, and that works within the browser to provide additional functionality. Browser Plug-ins may be installed with adware and used to display advertising as well as redirect the browser to alternate sites and alternate search results. Many Browser Plug-ins also monitor user web surfing and search data to facilitate targeted, contextual advertising. A toolbar is one type of Browser Plug-in.
Type Description Adware, also known as advertising software, displays third-party advertising on the computer. The ads can take several forms, including pop-ups, pop-unders, banners, or links embedded within web pages or parts of the Windows interface. Some adware advertising might consists of text ads shown within the application itself or within side bars, search bars, and search results. Adware is often contextually or behaviorally based and tracks browsing habits in order to display ads that are meant to be relevant to the user.
Level Description Moderate risks are often bundled with functionally unrelated software or installed without adequate notice and consent, and may display unwanted advertising on the user's desktop. Such risks may track users' online browsing habits and transmit non-personally identifying data back to a server in order to target advertising. These risks may be configured to start automatically with the operating system, use an auto-updater that the user cannot control, or install other functionally separate programs without adequate notice and consent. see more here.. »research.sunbelt-software.com/th···tid=3678 -- Gladiator Security Forum »www.gladiator-antivirus.com/ Missing Kids »www.missingkids.com/ |

3 edits | Thank you, MagMan and Name Game. It sounds like an IE thing. Puzzling, but apparently real. Haven't seen any pop-ups or -unders.
I use Avant Browser with MVPS' HOSTS, SpywareBlaster & SpywareGuard for one M$N group and one PhotoBucket account--plus the Mt. St. Helens camera at »www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volcanocams/msh/ as of this past weekend because something changed and it stopped showing the picture in my Firefox even when the page was allowed in NoScript.
I don't understand where it came from, but am glad it was right to eliminate it.
Edit: Looks like Adware.CDN is one of the newly updated items, so it could've been there for awhile without being caught as a bad thing before. |

 | reply to onDvine after today's update, ad-aware is flagging two alleged "CDN" items on my computer..
one is an activex-killbit, in my registry, and the other item is another registry item that is associated with "adshield's" "context menu items"..
here are the items from the ad-aware scan log:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\internet explorer\activex compatibility\{9a578c98-3c2f-4630-890b-fc04196ef420}
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\internet explorer\menuext |

1 edit | It looks like they're the same as found in mine. Do you have any idea of what they're from?

2 edits | reply to onDvine the activex-killbit could have been added by "spywareblaster", spybot's "immunization", or by some other program's "immunization", which adds "activex-killbits" to the registry..
"activex-killbits" are nothing to worry about since they only help to prevent malware from running..
you can look in your "registry", in "HKCU\software\microsoft\internet explorer\menuext" (if that is what ad-aware is flagging on your computer) and see what is associated with it.. in my case, it is "adshield" "context menu items"..
to look in your registry, go to "start"/"run" and type "regedit", to open "regedit".. ("start" is the "start" button at the bottom-left of your computer screen) |

| Firefox is already my primary browser and sometimes I use Opera, as well. My Avant only goes to the sites specified above. That's why I was puzzled about where I could've picked something like that up, but apparently I didn't. |

| said by Oleg:... Yes some sites would not work with Firefox or Opera It's my preference to use Avant for a couple of sites even though they would work in Firefox and Opera. Keeping separate cookies is one reason. Browsers are tools; there's no good reason not to use several if that's what pleases me. |
