I would take the rug to get professionally cleaned, If that doesn't work, buy a new rug.

"Natures Miracle" in the orange bottle - contains additional orange cleaner. Works even on blood.

Before thinking the smell is gone, have someone else come to your house and check or tell you.

My wife uses Nature's Miracle and it's hit and miss. What she also uses which seems to work better is vinager(1/2 vinager 1/2 water). Put it on a scrub brush and lightly scrub it in. Then take Ammonia (1/2 Ammonia 1/2 water) and spray that on the spot. Let the mixture sit and make sure the room is well vented.

Good luck.

Ditto. Cat pee smell is a bitch to get rid of and usually, other people notice it even if the homeowner doesn't.

If there is even a hint of the smell left, the cat is likely to return to and use the same spot.

There are products that use something or other to break down and neutralize the odor enzymes in the urine. They have them specifically for cat urine and are available in well stocked pet stores. Don't look in the supermarket pet section.

Get right on it or, like the lady said, the cat will be back for more in the same spot.

What about "Urinegone" on that infomercial with the free blacklight.

And this can be an indication of Urinary problems including blockage of the Urethra. Been there, check for small pees, often.
Otherwise, you pissed off the cat, or another animal in the house did.

I agree. you pissed off the cat somehow. Cats will rebel via their toilet.
if it is indeed urethra problems, change their food to a "urinary tract formula". your vet might have other options too.

Nature's Miracle tends to work pretty good, but you also need to give the rug a good shampooing as well. I've noticed high humidity will bring back the smell until you suck every last bit out.

Re: Cat pee'd on carpet... smell help

I personally wouldn't waste my money on something advertised on an infomercial. HOWEVER, They DO sell the blacklight in Petsmart (saw it last weekend) and I also agree with Nature's Miracle. It's a little more expensive than the others, but it seems to work a bit better.

Chipmunk,
that's a Monty Python skit if I remember correctly:

Mrs. Conclusion (Chapman): Hullo, Mrs. Premise.
Mrs. Premise (Cleese): Hullo, Mrs. Conclusion.
Conclusion: Busy Day?
Premise: Busy? I just spent four hours burying the cat.
Conclusion: Four hours to bury a cat?
Premise: Yes - it wouldn't keep still.
Conclusion: Oh - it wasn't dead, then?
Premise: No, no - but it's not at all well, so as we were going to be on the safe side...

As for the OP's problem, the ammonia solution may work better that the enzymes..

2 pts hydrogen peroxide

1/4 cup baking soda

2 tbs Joy Dish Soap

No substitution on the dish soap.

If you're worried about it bleaching your carpet try it in a safe place first.

Mix it all up in a bowl and use a hand towel to slop it on the affected spots.

There are *many* reasons why a cat would pee out of the box, some medical, others behavioral. Go to www.thecatsite.com and check out the behavior forum, at the top is a sticky article on cat peeing.
