Re: My review of MagicJack

There's a post on the baby MJ forum addressing how to remove the software. »Help remove magicJack from computer It would be interesting if both you and mozerd concurred that the recipe is safe and effective...

Will do. I read the procedure, and there's more to it than that.

Deleting the vidxxxx keys doesn't work here, and they're not all associated with MagicJack. There are several other keys that should be removed. There's also a process in msconfig that should be removed.

I got rid of MJ on this machine [since I've decided to host it on the fileserver].

Hopefully, others who know a few things about manual, forcible software removal will read and critique this in case I missed something. I'll look for replies in the morning. I don't think these instructions are 'ready for prime time' yet. Consider them an 'alpha release'. This computer seems to have survived the process.

Here's what I thought I had to do to get rid of MJ:
{DO NOT TAMPER WITH THE WINDOWS REGISTRY UNLESS YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!}

remove ([windows drive]:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\mjusbsp\)
remove entry 'cdloader2' from msconfig startup

Delete:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Talk4free]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\cdloader]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\(only the entry pertaining to magicjack.exe!)]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\(only the entry pertaining to magicjack.exe!)]

[I used brackets around the registry keys to compensate for the text wraparound in the forum. The keys are meant to be on single lines.]

You really do not have to mess with your registry. Just use CCleaner »www.ccleaner.com/

I have two more machine to clean up, so I'll try CCleaner and see if it gets everything. If it does, that would be a lot easier.

(topic move) My review of MagicJack

The post that was here (and all 2 followups to it), has been removed. First - it was not part of a "review of MagicJack" Second, CSRs/Tech Chat are for support - not engaging in design discussions - they are not part of the design team.

There are any number of places to find the specific registry entries that can be removed for those inclined to do so.
