Thanks for that !
I ordered yesterday. I'll kick the tires with it, and if it works as well as expected, will order another for my daughter. She's been getting raped by Comcast to the tune of $40/month - so she'll be thrilled to be able to save that !!!
Appreciate the assistance.

| Jeff - I won't be connecting it to home wiring.
I have 2 lines currently. One is used as a "business" line and for FAX. That line will be disconnected (eventually, presuming that MJ works as expected). Today, it's only connection is to a 2-line Panasonic cordless base station in my 'office'. That unit is within 5 feet of all my computers, one of which will get the MJ installed. I'll run a line from that computer/MJ to the base station - which gives me cordless access throughout the house and outdoors.
Sorry... -- If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled? Living in "an optimized state of temporary chaos" |

I asked support about this and they replied that "it might work". I would think if you have multiple phones with electronic ringers, it should be OK. I would think that mechanical ringers would require too much amperage. I'm going to give it a whirl when my device shows up. |

| said by jeffnyc :I'm just concerned about some type of electrical feedback that will fry your usb port or even computer . Don't be. The only possibility is that the phones will attempt to draw more power from the USB port than possible, in which case, it simply won't work. Nothing of this will fry your port, much less your computer. |

| reply to SMCinAZ Got my MagicJack in the mail today. Haven't used it much, but one thing I am having trouble with is inbound caller id. If I hook up one phone, I get the caller id. If I run it through the house tel wire to several phones, no caller id. What gives? |

| reply to swanboy There may not be enough power to push through all that wiring. Try unhooking one phone at a time until it works. That will tell you how many phones you can hook up. Otherwise, get an expandable telephone system with one base and extra handsets. That's what I have had for 2 years and it works great. |

join:2003-10-17 | Yeah, that works. But I like having a corded phone in the kitchen hooked up since in my house, I can never find the cordless handsets. They tend to all end up in my daughter's room or between the cushions in the couch. |

| reply to swanboy Here's how I did it. 1st) I have had a Skype line for over a year so I bought a Philips wireless / PC-less phone for Skype. 2) I bought a MagicJack and connected it. 3) I use GrandCentral for my local number.
Now when anyone calls my local number (GC) while the computer is on....it rings my Skype phone and my MagicJack at the same time....just depends which phone I want to answer from. When I have the computers off....the Philips wireless Skype phone rings. Either way I get my calls through GrandCentral and everything is superb. It's not as difficult as it sounds and it also gives me two call out lines (one when the PC is off). BTW, I have the MagicJack connected to my home line with one base and 5 wireless phones.
Hey....works for me and with GC...no one is the wiser. |

| For another incoming line when you have the computers off. Use an ATA and set it up for GizmoProject and have Grand Central forward to your GizmoProject number.

| reply to swanboy Another review of sorts.
My MJ arrived in the mail yesterday. Setup was as easy and fast as already described, so I won't bore you with that again.
Hooked it up to my laptop and did the registration and number selection thing - temporarily took a Maryland area code/exchange until they get set up in New York. Unplugged my POTS line 2 from the Panasonic 2-line cordless base station, and plugged in the line from the MJ. Works like a charm. Made several calls - clarity is better than the POTS line was.
Today I pulled the MJ from the laptop and plugged in to a desktop - it installed the software and was available in about a minute. (As might be expected, your service/account/phone # information is stored either in the MJ itself, or the MJ has a 'key value' that retrieves it from a central server when it connects to a USB port). Plugged the line from the MJ into my HP Photosmart 3310 AIO, and reconnected the 'out' line from the HP to my Panasonic base station. Inbound and outbound calls still work fine. FAXed to a friend of mine, both at V.17 (medium) and V.34 (Fast) speeds - worked like a charm.
As always, YMMV.
But for me, thank you MJ. You've just saved me $460 annually vs. POTS. Now all I have to do is get my GrandCentral setup the way I want it.....
Important note: this is a second POTS line in the house, and is a "business" line. My primary line is still a POTS line, and I also have multiple cell phones. So, this works perfectly for me. I also have multiple computers that run 24/7 anyway - when not being used for work they're running FAH or RAH »Team Helix
Since this works so well, and is hooked up to the cordless base station - it will be used for all long distance land-line calls from now on... -- If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled? Living in "an optimized state of temporary chaos" |
