The contentious issue with XP was the change to licensing and activation. If I remember correctly there was pretty universal excitement that home users finally got the NT kernel.

I just bought a new HP desktop for my daughter with Vista. Quite frankly there is little functional difference between it and XP other then changes to GUI.

The PC industry is finally at the "good enough" stage. PCs are capable enough that for most folks faster processor/graphics does not matter nor does a new improved O/S.
