Re: 146,000 registrations?

I tend to agree. They seemed to think everyone would activate their phones, immediately. But, due to system glitches, many people were unable to. Although another article I saw today says that AT&T says only 2% or fewer iPhone activators had problems activating that first weekend.

Also, everyone is talking about "two days", when it was really only one day and six hours, because the iPhone did not go on sale until 6 PM, Friday evening.

I wonder why there were only 146,000 registrations when it has been widely reported that 700,000 iPhones were sold?
Tim

Sales of the iPhone began just 30 hours before the official end of the AT&T fiscal second quarter. That 146,000 is the total number of activations that occurred in that 30 hours. This is from the AT&T announcement:

"Sales of the Apple iPhone have been robust. The June 29 launch allowed for less than two days of sales and activations before the end of the quarter. In that time, AT&T activated 146,000 iPhone subscribers, more than 40 percent of them new subscribers. Sales of the iPhone continue to be strong in July with store traffic above historical levels."

The number of iPhones sold to date will be much higher because of that.

Maybe it's because we're looking at the time period of 6PM Friday June 29 through June 30?

Off course it's a pipe dream. Look Apple is the marketing masters. What sounds better..we sold 700,000 or 146,000.

The 700K just makes people talk, talk, and do more talking about this overpirced, overhyped phone. And I am an Apple person. IMHO people are nuts to pay that much money for the product being offered. Way overpriced.

The first waves are done. The early adopters have bought their phones. Let's see where they are at next year?

Could it be that the 146K activations were new AT&T customers only, and that the rest were existing customers?

Just a guess.

I wonder why there were only 146,000 registrations when it has been widely reported that 700,000 iPhones were sold? I understand why the numbers might not match, exactly, but it seems like they should be a lot closer than that.

So, did 550,000 people buy iPhones just to use as iPods? Or, is the sales figure of 700,000 just another pipe dream?

Wait, here's another idea. 550,000 phones were bought by saps who thought they would buy them for $600 and sell them for $1200 into a sold-out market. Ha ha ha!
