I wonder why there were only 146,000 registrations when it has been widely reported that 700,000 iPhones were sold?
Could it be that the 146K activations were new AT&T customers only, and that the rest were existing customers?

Just a guess.
AT&T says total:

"AT&T activated 146,000 iPhone subscribers, more than 40 percent of them new subscribers. Sales of the iPhone continue to be strong in July with store traffic above historical levels."
