Here's another clue: just watch your NIC and modem lights when you're not doing anything with your computer.

Of course, if you've got everything set to automatically connect at will, this won't work.

In the case of the modem lights, it may not necessarily
indicate that your computer is a zombie. It could be
incoming unsolicited traffic (usually messenger spam).

There are various net meter type monitoring utilities also, which will give you a real time display of any network traffic going on...
