Comparing Call Quality?

Can anyone tell me what, other than network issues affects call quality? I assume each company uses different compression rates, codecs, etc. Is there a site that compares them?

I currently have SunRocket/TeleBlend and signed up for Packet 8. I received it today and spent `3 hours comparing the two. Right away the Packet 8 sounded terrible. Echos, droputs, jitter, etc. But, even when call is steady, the sound quality seems very hollow, lacking detail.

I tried Vonage a few years ago and they had a setting for low, med, high sound quality. High quality I think was 90K. Do they still offer this? At the time they did not have a local # for my area so I cancelled.

Wow, I really miss SunRocket... Contemplating, but very nervous about signing up for TeleBlend.

Packet8, out of the box, uses the G.729 low bandwidth codec. In my experience it seemed to be of less quality than the higher bit rate codec, G.711. Here's an interesting couple of links.

Edit: Packet8 users will chime in that the Packet8 adapter can be hacked to change codecs, I'll let them describe that. I no longer use P8.

g729 is a roughly 30k (closer to 28 I think) codec in the lower quality range. g723 is the worst at about 8kb, g729 is 2nd worst at about 28kb, g726 is pretty Ok at around 50 and g711 is the best at just under 100. P8's problem is they don't have SIP servers located across the US. Everything is in the San Jose area so if you live far from there, your data packets have a way to travel. Vonage continues to have the "high" (g711), "medium" (g726) and "low" (g729) codecs and if you have no bottlenecks (traceroute them) between you and Vonage, you should be fairly happy. P8 has a lot of happy customers but many, many disgruntled ones as well.
