East Tennessee latency problems

Just started noticing this a few nights ago and it continues tonight. 3rd hop through Kingsport is getting bad, and it was about 100ms higher an hour ago. This isn't the first time it's happened over the years and it was fixed before so I assume it's being monitored and worked on. Just hope it doesn't take long for a fix. Anyone got any input?

Well on a positive note its IN your Headend/CMTS -- If its happened before, and been fixed.. It is very likely an issue with a router. I'm sure they are aware of it, and will get it straightened out shortly.

Won't hurt to give them a call anyway, or if your local office is close by stop by and see if a tech is around.

(only if is close) and the problem is still occurring.

We are in the process of turning up a new OC-48 with ATT. This will help the areas in East TN fed out of the ATT pipe.

Everything is done, just waiting for the final testing to be completed by ATT. Should not be to much longer.

As always, IsdnWolf is on top of things in the East TN area. Thanks again, we're lucky to have you man!

I didn't notice the bad hop last night but I'll keep an eye on it in the weeks to come.

Sounds like you guys are going to be golden soon.

We had a new OC-48 added to our existing OC, and it has helped tremendously in the G'bham area.

I know some areas still have speed issues.. But a majority do not.. If you are fed off the Headend in Leeds.. I can attribute your bandwidth will be fulfilled. Not only are there two 48's running, but the upgrade to 10series + has been in place.

Just a long way of saying,.. I think you'll be pleased with the added bandwidth.

Also, ISDN, I didn't know you worked for Charter. -- For some reason I thought you were with the Telco,.. have you worked for Charter for a looong time? Or just a few years?

Take care,

10 Years in October...

I was with the Georgia group before transferring to TN. I have been getting an itch for something else though. Perhaps one of the smaller ISP's in the area.

Going to renew my CCNA in a couple of weeks and then knock out the CCNP after that. Perhaps I will put myself out in the job market in another couple of months..

Who knows. Charter has been good to me though. No hurry now.

I'm still seeing latency issues in the evenings. It seems like it is getting bogged down at ATT in Atlanta. My ping jumps up over 150ms. It was starting in Kingsport, but now it is at the Atlanta hop.

Wolf- any update on the OC-48?

Same results here... Been going on for the last few days. It usually takes a day or two before I get upset enough to call, and a few more days before I log in here.

Glad ISDNWolf is still here to clue me in on what's going on. God knows that tech support you get on the phone are next to retarded.

I tried to explain the tracert issue and the lady kept telling me she needed to check my signal strength and send a technician out. I finally told her this... imagine I leave my house, I turn off my street, to the main road and drive 4 miles to the interstate. If traffic is fine on my street and on the main road, but gets backed up on the interstate, would you send a guy to my house to determine why the interstate is backed up.

any update on this OC-48? had this issue for almost a week straight. speed is horrible between 8 PM to midnight.

was told to go to 2wire.com for a speed test and I was getting 1.5 to 2.5 on my 5 meg connection

Looking like next week.. Tuesday night/Wed morning.

This could change depending on how things go between us and ATT.

thanks for the heads up Wolf. just curious why happens every year or so?

why not upgrade ahead of time so when you reach capacity we don't have 2+ weeks of horrible service?

the only thing keeping me on charter is the lack of competetion. embark in the area really isn't offering the speeds that charter is so I'm sort of stuck and out of luck.

almost makes me want to move to a Fios covered area.

I can not go into to many details. Non-disclosures, trade secrets, and the such. I am sure Charter management as well as other providers read these posts.

We have to negotiate with providers for bandwidth to get the best possible price. We actually order this circuit around 9 months ago.

But between legal, paper work.. Then working with the telco to get the service in. In this case, ATT had to upgrade their POP because they could not provide the bandwidth.

Also, now that ATT bought Bellsouth. ATT is in no hurry to provide bandwidth right away. Not saying that is what happened here, but something to look at.

We are already in the process of negotiating bandwidth for next year. We are looking at creating another egress point elsewhere in the state. I know we are looking at several providers for this egress point.

When dealing with the Telco's it takes a long time. Took almost 6 months to get a DS3 ordered for our system in Ohio.

Anyways, next week provided all goes well.

Oh man... next week eh? I've got a clan match I am going to have to drop out of Sunday night because there's no way I can play with a 150-300 ping.

Tracert to my game server has some time outs on it now. But I guess I can hold off on until Wed. No use really trying to game during peak time until it's resolved and the new OC-48 is up and going.

I think for all the pain and anguish Charter puts us through, they should funnel us our own OC-48 directly to our homes. That would definitely make up for it

Thanks for the intel... without you I'd still be getting incredibly irate with tech support. Can't believe they still answer my calls

Looks like one a different scenario tonight... I'm doing good on on the first five hops, but the trade off to AT&T seems to choke. Averaging about 30-40ms on hops 1-5 and then hop 6 jumps to 150.

Earlier my problem began at hop 4, now it's 6. I can only hope that when the OC-48 is in place that AT&T at least resolves their issues.

If memory serves me correctly, it was AT&T causing the problem back in Dec 06 that lasted like 3 months or more.

Pitch, where ya out? I am across from Sevier Middle off Catawba downtown KPt. I am an IT consultant for a living and depend on my 10/1 connection for VPN, VOIP, remote connections, etc.. For awhile I was getting 4 - 6mb a sec at most from my 10mb line. After three months locating the problem I finally figured out it only happened when I was placed on the 24.xx ip subnet, never happened on the 71 or that 60 one they use. So I was going back and forth with charter techs, they said it was a virus on my computer cause I had too many lan connections listed in a ipconfig /all and I had too many UDP and TCP ports "listening" in a netstat -na. After explaining this to the phone tech for like half an hour about how I know exactly they were created and they were not virus' she told me to update my NIC card. Which was lovely as it kept randomly issing a blue screen of death and a STOP error on the vista ultimate machine. Finally they came back to my e-mail and said it was computer related with no additional info.

I was pretty upset at this point as I pay for two seperate modem lines with two seperate modems a 5mb and a 10mb, I also pay for charter tv services on two boxes so I am shelling out close to 220 bucks a month. I called back and told the next tech about what I found out on the IP and he said he would note it down and if there was anything else. So now I was just like "well this has been happening for three months and I just figured the problem is on your side and how to fix it, stick me on the 71 ip and keep me there until you get the 24 ip routing fixed, I think this need more attention then a note" Then the guy on the phone tried to sell me business services with a fixed ip as they could not put me on a 71.xx subnet. So I told this guy to get me his supervisor and he would not do it, he kept trouble shooting the problem trying to find something wrong with my computer. I sent him my QCR results again and I have not heard back. Right now I am on the 60 subnet which seems to be ok it is the 24 subnet that kills me when it is assigned speed wise. Just a thought and maybe some info on who you are dealing with on the phone. Charter will blame everything before themselves, you got a router? It's the router. Your NIC card is bad, the modem is bad, etc.. never will they admit to a problem on their end without you working your wording right telling em you have no router it is directly into the modem, that you own the modem and it is 3 months old etc.. THey were going to roll another truck out here but the last one replaced everything except the pole wire and problem still persists. So after I found the IP thing I canceled that but still have had no perm resolution, unless you call manually renewing the ip of the modem on purpose all the time hoping for a re-assign to the 71.xx subnet is fixed. Latencey though here has been fine, call them, tell em you have a routing issue and you can run QCR to prove it and then ask for their e-mail and send it in and they will send it to the techs. Sorry for the long winded reply, needed to vent, the latency is fine even ont the 24.xx ip subnet, I am running it through a router at the moment, but pop it off the router and do a speed test the max I will see is 5mb a sec until I pull a 71.xx ip then my downloads will be 10200k a sec again. My uploads are always 999k a sec and I have 10/1 through a router or on the modem only and on any subnet. .

I'm right off Bloomingdale Pk... right down from CVS. Currently on 66.x.x.x which at night is unbearable.

Your story seems very typical... the best one was when a Charter tech actually had the audacity to tell me that SPYWARE had infected my router. I couldn't help but to laugh at him for that one. I told him I was experiencing the same results on my PS2, my X-Box and several PC's, one of which was running Linux (Linspire 5.0 now Ubuntu) He kept trying to tell me that my PC was infected with spyware and virus' which was causing the slow down, so when I told him I saw the same problem with slow speed on every piece of equipment that had an ethernet port, he then proceeded with his theory that the spyware had somehow infected my router.

I was playing 2142 some tonight up until 30 mins ago when my ping went from 80ms to 200ms+. It's impossible to play a good game like that. 80ms is tough, but I still kick ass, but 200ms going up against someone with 15-20ms just can't cut it.

Right now my TV service is DirecTV which I am not happy with the picture quality... but I'll be damned if I give Charter any more of my money.

Hopefully IsdnWolf will work his magic so I don't have to defect to Embarq and DSL.
