| reply to GreatPumpkin If they are moving stuff over getting ready to fix the problem, perhaps this is to be expected as far as getting worse in the next few days. It will be well worth it if when they are finished we have a nice ping/download/upload rate.
I am glad that Charter knows they have a problem, and we have Mr. Wolf and Tony interested in the problem.
Man, getting management interested and even getting a ticket seems like a battle won.
Things can only get better right!! |

| reply to GreatPumpkin Bigroot--if you do a tracert and your log says it goes throug kingsport, my guess is it will do you good also.
I know very little about these things though. I just base it on every tracert here, they all go bad at and after the kingsport hop. |

| What would rule is if they just periodically relocate equipment to solve a problem in once place, only to cause a problem in another
When Kingsport gets fixed, then some place in Idaho will have our problem until equipment gets shifted again. |

| reply to GreatPumpkin What makes this funny and frustrating at the same time was the other night when I called Charter on my VoIP phone to complain about speed, I lost internet for about 5 minutes which automatically disconnected my call. I have a stress ball I squeeze and throw every single time I have to call them. |

| Lol the agent thing all you gotta do is say agent over and over and it gets you to one. I delt with her before trying to say customer service or agent =) Also hitting 0 works I think too lol. I was horrible last night, well at least it is only hurting me when I wanna do something fun like online gaming =) While I am working at least it is not flooded, most likely cause all the kids are in school =P Also maybe use what I use speakeasy.net/speedtest and the atlanta location as it is super fast for me and pretty accurate, that is where the speed stuff is pasted from. Wait till you see it at 1mb during 9pm times will make you cringe lol.

Hi everyone - you know its kind of funny you guys are seeing the exact same problem I am having (and the entire Charter NW) where pings go >200ms nightly - well I had noticed if I did a tracert or ping to Speakeasy then I would still get great performance - even while getting mass packetloss and horrid pings to everything else!
Now I see you in Tennessee are reporting the same thing - pings to Speakeasy are fine even during peak times?!!!
It looks to me like we're getting some kind of traffic shaping or prioritization going on - the Speakeasy traffic seems to go over the same routes for me but mysteriously "speeds back up" once off AT&T!
It seems to me Charter's traffic on the AT&T network is being de-prioritized and this addtional latency and packetloss is being artifically induced, while the traffic to Speakeasy is prioritized and allowed to pass freely! A horrible violation of the net neutrality concept? I think the proof is below:
(note Speakeasy speed test: 8.5mbit down, 965kbps up, speed test anywhere else ~1.5mbit down, 300-700kbps up)

Ya know, I saw that same thing the other night. Four other speed tests showed the problem while speakeasy acted as if I was in high speed heaven.
Kinda makes you wonder about the whole NET NEUTRALITY issue. |

| Also just to note with the charter 10/1 maybe like 1 outta 20 times will it ever pop over 9mb a sec from any of the dslreports speed tests, the speakeasy.net/speedtest atlanta test site constantly is over 10 megs =) Maybe I should buy a speakeasy dual t1 and just provide internet service to you other three ppl suffering with charter in kingsport area =P |

| reply to GreatPumpkin Alright everyone - need your help here :)
I think this situation is bigger than any of us realize.
I looked back through this forum at all latency problem posts in regards to AT&T and Charter and noticed "this" kind of latency pattern happening over and over again.
Now charter_hsd provided another piece of the puzzle in this post: »[HSI] AT&T problems
AT&T appears to be using new routers from Avici which are intended to (more or less), traffic shape, according to their website: »www.avici.com/products/
For example just take the first sentence: "Today's IP networks are required to deliver more than simply best-effort traffic"
-----------------------------------------------------
My theory thus far: AT&T is shaping the traffic they get from Charter with these new Avici routers. All our regular (ie consumer grade) traffic during peak times is being given low priority, but some destinations/routes are specifically prioritized (ie Speakeasy, yahoo in some cases).
How can we prove this? Well if your nightly pings are shooting up, ping Speakeasy and show us what you find in relation to your "normal" traffic. |

1. It would "seem" Charter would be just as upset as we are if what you suspect is true?
2. This shaping "IF TRUE" is not legal right??
3. This is very interesting and wonder how the fix Mr. Wolf mentioned (ticket in per posts on this thread) which should be done Friday night...and what effect this fix will have. (I had high hopes and now I have to wonder).
4. Mr. Wolf..can you please give us your thoughts on this? |

Actually no Net Neutrality at this point is only a concept, and is not bound by any law. Would Charter get upset? Who knows, I don't think so they seem to not really care that much as long as you pay the bill!
Traffic shaping isn't automatically bad. In fact it can be very useful to give "everyone an equal slice of the pie" when bandwidth fills up. Unfortunatly it can also be used to discriminate and determine "who gets cuts to the front of the line". Right now for some strange reason Speakeasy seems to get that privilege. |
