Denver, CO | Smells fishy I thought those expensive generators click on instantly after loosing power? Someone screwed up big time. Maybe a disgruntled employee with a sense of humor?
Also, why would big web dependent..(I mean they exist only on the web)..not have back up data center for backups and alternate web servers? Different geographic servers would be a must especially having mains in San Francisco which will likely slip into the ocean in the next decade or at least have a few disruptive quakes.

kudos:4 | Re: Smells fishy According to their status page's latest update, they have 10 generators. Three of them failed, which caused a fourth to fail.
Generators 1 and 3 both shutdown on startup because they detected a problem, but they don't know what the problem is.
The first backup shutdown on startup as well.
The second backup then had to cover for the first, which overloaded and also shutdown. | |

Obviously you're not going to hear about when they work, because it's not newsworthy for someone to say, "The datacenter was running as normal during a power outage."
Especially when this is common.
It's is the failures that are not common, and are newsworthy, because there is something adversely affected. | |

Oswego, IL | The FAQ on the 365Main site seem to indicate that there was a SURGE, not a loss.
Maybe some of the generator control systems were damaged by the SURGE.
If a transformer failed (as seems to be the case), and it was a down stepping transformer...it would be possible for an over voltage to occur as windings in the transformer melted together.
This surge was very likely followed by an outage. Maybe they were unable to recover from the outage because of damage caused by the surge that proceeded it?! | |
