| Azureus TCP/UDP Port?
I have 3Web 7.0 Mbps download, and 512 Kbps upload here in Scarborough (Toronto), and was wondering what is the best TCP/UDP Port to use in Azureus? I have been using 1720 for quite some time and I'm not sure if there is something better that has came along recently. Thanks guys |

| Port numbers have nothing to do with performance. Think of ports as a door for your computer, except you have a little over 65000 of them. Each door is somewhat specific to a certain application/server, such as: Bit Torrent, Web Server, DNS Server, Telnet, SSH, Newsgroups, Mail server, the list goes on. i.e.: Port 25 (or Door 25) would mean you'll enter the Mail server. Port 80 (Door 80) would mean you'll enter the Web Server. Get the idea? Any port below 1024 is set to certain applications and should never be changed. Anything above 1025 can be used for any application.
To improve performance in Bit Torrent, try looking into the encryption functions of Azureus. I can't guarantee if they may even improve at all (since you are using cable, where bandwidth throttling occurs) but it may help out. -- Remember to scrub out on pppoe0 max-mss 1440 ... *thumbs up* |

| I highly there is a port which bypasses throttling. You're stuck with 2 options if you want faster Bit Torrent speeds:
1) Encrypt Bit Torrent packets. I know Azuerus supports encryption, as well as uTorrent (but I would stay away from uTorrent (»torrenthelp.depthstrike.com/2007···out.html)
2) Switch to DSL. You have options such as Bell, Primus, Teksavvy, etc for DSL service and they offer unaltered bandwidth (based on the distance from your house to the CO). I am confident that Primus and Teksavvy do not alter bandwidth, not 100% sure on Bell. -- Remember to scrub out on pppoe0 max-mss 1440 ... *thumbs up* |

| I tried Bell and it was a POS, took the tech support 1 year to tell me that I am too far away from their tower. As a result I was only getting 1.0 Mbps. I have the encryption on already and my speeds in Azureus are not too bad (100-400kB/s), but I just want more. When I DL files from FTP serves or from Microsoft I often hit 800kB/s+ and I just wanted to see if it was possible to do that with a torrent. |

| If you're downloading torrents at 100-400kb/s, you're doing very good.
You have to understand that Microsoft, Google, Apple, any big company is going to spend a lot on their Internet bandwidth .. or Internet speed. With Bit Torrent, you're connecting to 10, 20, maybe even 100 users and you've managed to download at a total rate of 100-400kb/s. Thats excellent, because none of those users have an Internet bandwidth as large as Microsoft (not to mention they are also download/upload the same/other Bit Torrent files to other people .. and maybe surfing the web at the same time!)
Nothing you can do to boost the speed of torrent files at this point. Each torrent file is hosted by different people at different parts of the world... and obviously, some of them will be on dialup, basic cable/dsl, normal cable/dsl, "extreme" cable/dsl, fibre, T1, T3 (ha!), etc. -- Remember to scrub out on pppoe0 max-mss 1440 ... *thumbs up* |

| Thanks for clearing this stuff up with me. BTW, you a Deep Dish fan right? I've seen them several times here in Toronto @ the Guvernment. Not really my cup of tea, but a lot of ppl love them. Personally, I'm more into Armin Van Buuren, Johan Gielen, Ferry Corsten, Scott Bond and Tiesto. I love that Dutch uplifting trance, especially back in 2000 when it was at its peak. |
