| [Help Me] [DIR-655] PPPoE DSL Drops Constantly!
I have Bellsouth Fastaccess 1.5MB DSL at my home, using a Westell D90-327W30-06 modem and a D-Link DIR-655 Modem. In short, the DSL connection will drop constantly when I use the D-Link as the Bridged Modem, but the connection will work fine when the modem acts as the modem and the router acts as the router.
I thought it was a problem with the room the modem was in, I have moved it to a room with less noise on the phone line, but the same issue occurs.
Of course I would rather use the router as the bridged modem, but I can't keep the connection up for long enough! I'm at wits end with no troubleshooting left to really do (ongoing problem..) and the main problem now is increased latency because there's a router and a modem in the case... not a big increase on ping time but I like to keep it as low as possible for video games.
I did notice that it's a *lot* worse when I'm doing uploading (bittorrent, for instance).
I also read through the how-to to setup a D-Link router with a Westell modem but there was no real info there .. it was more instructions on how to set it up using PPPoE..
Is there something simple I am missing?? |

| The DLink DIR-655 cannot be used as a modem, it is a different type of device altogether. I think you are saying that you want to use the router as the device that handles the PPPoE services instead of using the Westell gateway for that purpose. I'm a Verizon DSL customer and have the Westell gateway configured as a bridge and the DIR-655 handles the PPPoE. There is a specific configuration change to the Westell device in order for it to do that efficiently. There is information in the Verizon FAQ here about how to properly configure the Westell as a bridge. -- "When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?" Pete Seeger 1961

| Yes, that's exactly what I meant. I'm using the DIR-655 to handle PPPoE and the Westell as the bridge.
I did not see any instructions that I have not already taken in the Verizon Online DSL FAQ.
I have the modem configured as a bridge, I haven't read any instructions that really say there's anything else to do other than set it up as a bridge .. well except to setup the router part which I've done as well .. they just put it barney style in the FAQ's |

| That is still the same thing.. just tells me how to setup the modem into bridge mode and to be sure the router is setup correctly.. I've setup the modem correctly into bridge mode, and have set the router to PPPoE..
I've done it correctly, the internet works for a few hours and then drops and reconnects.. especially when doing a lot of uploading (bittorrent, xbox live, etc) |

| Having spoken to Verizon's and BellSouth's tech support, they often don't know how to bridge the westell's properly. Also, there's various ways to setup a westell to work with a dlink router. Typically, the ISP forgets to turn off DHCP, in the Westell's. It is correct that you're better off bridging the 327w and using PPPoE on the dlink router gateway. |

| I have called Bellsouth's tech support a number of times and actually had a tech come out here.. They said nothing about it, but it doesn't really suprise me.. The tech seemed like he knew what he was doing but I had to leave early and left him in the care of a friend who didn't know anything about the situation... he put the modem in a better room.. I'm getting a better SN Margin but still drops frequently.. I'll retry my setup from scratch and see what I get. |

1 edit | Well, I turned off DHCP on the westell, set it up as a bridge, and set my router to PPPoE.
I then went to »www.testmy.net and ran an upload test using the biggest chunk and the internet dropped after about a minute..
here's what the router says.
And the logs say..
and my statistics all look fine except I get a few wireless errors.. I say a few, the exact number is 156 right now. |

| The only thing that looks different here is this entry for WAN status:
Authentication & Security : CHAP
I see

| I am still having an issue with this. I no longer believe it's something wrong with the router, but with either all routers or the dsl itself.
I have tried three modems now, two westell 6100's and a westell wireless gateway and two routers, one dlink dir655 and one motorola wr850g .. I get the same issue with all.
I am going to repost in the AT&T Southeast forums and see if I can get any resolution |

| reply to floods Make sure your router is in a clear open space, not air flow blocking.(may be use the stand to make it 2 inches above the base). This router can be very hot if you don't do a good job of cooling. This hot can make the router very unstable even can kill it in two weeks. |

| Made sure I was setting it up right, I'm bridging the router / modem properly according to the guides sent to me.. The router is also well ventilated. I'd read that it had a slight overheating issue... overheating isn't the issue though.
If I use the modem and have it use PPPoE and give my router a network address then the router gives me an address, it all works fine, no disconnects at all. It's just when I bridge them that this all happens. |
