Canon PowerShot S230 5.4mm 1/60th F2.8
|
We went shopping yesterday while trying to get out of the heat (102 in the shade; up to 122 in the sun) and came home with this. My wife says it's my anniversary (Oct 14) & birthday (Oct 6) present. I wonder how long she's going to make me wait to open it. Picture was taken with my old S230. That camera has been good to me over the past 5 years. |

Nikon SB-400 NIKON D80 24mm 1/200th F4 ISO200
box (diffuser not incl) | NIKON D80 24mm 1/60th F4 ISO200
SB-800 and SB-400 size comparison |
Mr. Rockwell pretty much sums it up: 1.) Bounce Flash. 2.) Coverage with ultrawide lenses - bounced (diffuser alone helps but still casts a shadow at ultra-wide ie. 12mm) 3.) To replace a bigger flash. It's great for indoors where happy snaps happen, but if I could only have 1 flash, it would be the SB-800. The SB-800 comes with many accessories (diffuser, integrated bounce card), and has robust remote abilities; any P&S can trigger the SB-800 like a strobe (SU-4 mode) as demonstrated below. In contrast, the SB-400 has no remote capabilities so I purchased the SB-400 for traveling purposes only. The built-in flash does 90% of what I need for fill (for vacation type photos), so if this flash was any larger and didn't have an adjustable lens, I wouldn't have considered it. FUJIFILM FinePix F30 8mm 1/60th F5.6 ISO100 Sb-400 on D80
Slightly off-topic, the SB-600 has remote capabilities but needs a commander flash. This isn't a problem for D70, D80, D200 bodies since the built-in flash has a commander mode. However, the SB-600 doesn't have the SU-4 mode that enables other light sources to trigger it.

absolutely, gugarci It's a fun, useful flash that you can enjoy right away whereas the SB-800's manual rivals the size of the D80's manual! |

I know my camera is not a DSLR. But, it is a great camera for me. I got my Canon PowerShot G9 Today. I took a picture of it along with the SanDisk Ultra III Extreme SDHC 4GB card (which was separate). Kristi |

Finally after 2 delays I have my camera. Actually it came sooner than they said the second time. Now I need to learn about a DSLR more,, but I think its going to be a great hobbie and expensive one at that,,lol. Anyone recommend some starter things to get, like basic filters or cleaning kits? I know I need to get a bag to protect it. |

Definitely a bag. Get one big enough to grow with you a bit for when you get around to adding a few more lenses. As far as filters, I got this set of Tiffens for both of my lenses. If you select Adorama as the vendor, there is a major price difference of almost $20 compared to anywhere else. I've gotten a fair amount of use from a tripod already, so that may be something to consider. You don't have to spend major bucks on one, but I wouldn't trust a Wal-Mart special with this setup. I already had the Suncom deluxe model you can get from Best Buy or Circuit City for like $80, and is sturdy enough for general use. There may be some cheaper models that are sturdy enough, but I especially recommend this one if you're a taller guy like me (6'4). The last item that you might find useful (which I've yet to pick up) is a remote. The Pentax wired ones are quite pricey (more than the wireless; go figure). I think Gemologist had a link to an E-bay shop for third party ones that were like 1/4 the price. Congrats and good luck with your new toy. You're gonna love it! |

I have been waiting too long for this, for a nice comfortable roomy backpack that can securely hold my tripod. And I finally got a decent tripod. Tamrac Expedition 5 Manfrotto 725B Tripod. Haven't done any real field testing just pretend, and so far it seems to be perfect for me. Now I just need a 100-400 Lens and I'll be happy for the time being. The Expedition 5 is far roomier than I need right now, but I will be able to grow into with another body more lenses a big zoom and a flash plus tons of rooms for filters, whatever it may be. |

Nice camera yj4x4,,,,,, looks like Santa making some early stops this year. I almost went with the D40,, but Pentax was such a good value and deal for me.
Also thanks for the advice Jodokast96 and TigerNutz,, as extra money becomes available I'll be getting some of what u mentioned,,a bag will be first to protect camera though. |

I used to have a Pentax K1000 35mm SLR. For being a low end camera it was quite good. Unfortunately, it and all my lenses were stolen from my car years ago. But i can't complain, the money from the insurence company paid for my first Nikon, a N6006 that I still have and use. |
