Maybe I'm just seeing it wrong but it looks like paper or some kind of thin non-reusable plastic.

Is that correct?
No - it is actually a pretty sturdy piece of semi flexible plastic. I have had that type pf body cover for years, they are very nice.

Slick! Dying to know two things. First, how does it feel compared to the K20D? Second, is the high ISO IQ as good as what I've been hearing?
I basically just unboxed it and did a quick test shot. Everything looks fine. The camera powered up w/o problems with a set of Sanyo Eneloop Hybrids. I will take it out for a couple of test shots in the next few day.

Compared to the K20D: It's tiny and super light. Great for hiking.

While most of the photography classified ads I find on Craig’s List are either from folks offering equipment that is priced at near or over new, junk or by sellers who have no idea of what they are offering (think hot), however when I found a well worded ad offering a Manfrotto 516 fluid head for a third of new it grabbed my attention. Turns out the offer was from a long time videographer who’s sticks failed and he got a sweet deal from Adorama on a package (head and sticks) and just wanted to get a little return on his old head. Turned the head while worn looking worked perfectly and it turned out to be a good deal for both of us.

I'm not so impressed with Canon footage I've seen from their lower end camcorders like the XL-H1. The 20X Zeis tele lens on the Sony HVR-V1U is a lot sharper and less plagued with CA.
In my opinion one can write off the Canon Prosumer camcorders such as the XL and its lower end cousin GL series.
Now perhaps you're talking about the $160,000 zoom lenses that are several feet long and weigh over 80lbs.. those I'm sure will perform well. But at that price, they ought to!
Those are what I was referring to and that is where Canon beats Fujinon hands down even though Fuji has many parallel models that are equally or lower priced.

The Fujinon are better at the wide and midrange. They don't do so well beyond 90% of zoom range. But within that range, they are amazing.
As I stated, in the ENG arena the Fuji’s kick butt and are very competitively priced, I have used them for a number of years on my Panasonic camcorders and they not only work well they will take a licking and keep on ticking.

When it comes to ENG lenses in my opinion Fujinon provides the best bang for the buck, however if one is getting into long zoom field lenses Canon cannot be beat for quality reliability and durability however they are a BMW lens as in Burn My Wallet.

It's funny, when I show some footage I shot on the projection system for my wife to see, and then we watch a rented blu-ray disc, she almost always asks why the rental movie is not sharp. I always crack a remark like, "well honey, it wasn't shot on an XDCam."

Finally Made The Move To HDTV

After a few months of deliberating a move from SD to HD and researching the costs versus the features I finally decided to make the move to HD, the second decision was tape or tapeless/card based and the decision was to stay tape based as we have a small fortune tied up in tape based NLE’s and we decided we would remain that way for now not wanting to totally kill the 2009/2010 budget this early in the year.

The primary driver for HD was while most of the local broadcasters transmit in HD the majority of their field work (excepting sports) is shot in SD and we wanted to get an edge on them early in the game, my personal predictions and that of my partner are the 2010 and 2012 election cycles will be a generous and newsworthy few years and should produce enough business to justify the costs of the upgrades. We also have a plan if we can get the financing to acquire either a majority or total ownership in a floundering local UHF TV station/license.

Anyhow the first of the HD units arrived from B&H at the beginning of this week and after a day on the bench being equipped followed by a few days of testing it is now ready to go into the field and get to work earning its keep or so I hope.

For what it is worth the unit is a JVC GY-HD200 SD/HDV Mini-DV based camcorder equipped with a Fujinon Th16x5.5BRMU zoom lens, an Azden shotgun microphone, an Azden single channel diversity antenna wireless receiver, an Anton-Bauer 50 watt Ultralight II and powered by an Anton-Bauer Gold Mount with a combination of Trimpacs (45 watt hour) and Digital HYTRON (140 watt hour) packs.

The drivers side of the JVC unit.

The business end.

The public side.

Obligatory box shot, I like how pro equipment is boxed free of colorful photos of the camcorder being used by a model unknowing of even how to turn the unit on nor less of how to operate it.

I've come to really respect the lens quality on that camera. It has no business being on such a low cost camera. I watch a lot of Hollywood's creations and I frankly spot chromatic aberrations and barrel distortion on a lot of films shot today and really bad distortions on films shot by Stanley Kubrick (ever notice the internal reflections in the lenses he uses in 2001?), and now I have a completely different respect for the Fujinon lenses supplied with the XDCams.

Sony took a tip from Panasonic's P2 system and developed the next generation based on ExpressCard vs. Panny's CardBus architecture, providing an 800mb/s read/write speed on a solid state card. I think it it's wonderful, because it opened the door to overcranking and to being able to download an hour of footage in about 8 minutes and be ready to edit immediately, even from the card directly.

We actually did use an Anton Bauer battery pack system when we did the 8-hour time lapse at the DreamRide 2009 event in Farmington last month. We put one my EX1s in a 38' scissors lift and shot 1 fps all day. Ended up with 22 minutes of video. My partner edited down to about a minute. It's up on YouTube under DreamRide 2009: Field of Bikes.

The best way to see my work is on a large projection system. It's impossible to appreciate CineAlta footage on a 50" plasma. You really have to see it on a wall-sized screen. We recently installed a 154" screen and an InFocus IN82 30-bit projector and that thing can do black like no LCD or plasma I have ever seen, and color is accurate. I authored some stuff on Blu-ray, including the New Milford Memorial Day parade, and the footage from Westover ARB last fall, the day Kent Shockley wrecked his jet powered truck, that is just incredible. It makes the blu-ray movies we rent look rather soft and grainy by comparison. The camera will do 12 f-stops of lattitude (a fact verified by a respected British cinematographer, Allistair Chapman) and is full-raster HD. Using the HD-SDI output, there is 30-bit, uncompressed HD video there, which, if you have access to a Wafian recorder system ($17K), you can record the full quality uncompressed signal for green screen compositing where quality is absolutely critical.

I did a concert with the Bridgeport Symphony, which, played back in our theater with multichannel sound, just blows people away with the realism.

Very nice unit and actually for a card based camera that is not a high price at all.

By the way can you up-mount aftermarket power like Anton-Bauer on it?

I would love to see some of your work with it though.

Compared to Panavision film cameras, it's cheap, though. Some of the earlier CineAlta line cost $103,000 - $250,000, such as the F23/F35 models.
The EX1 offers best bang for the buck, while the EX3 offers the option of interchangeable lenses, genlock and dedicated switches for many functions. The unsung strong point of these cameras is their DAT-quality audio recording capability. Plug in a pair of Neuman U87A's and you've got audiophile sound with a picture that rivals the best Blu-ray movies. No wonder some movies showing in theaters today are shot in portions on these cameras now. District 9 is the latest. A few months ago, it was Public Enemies.
