Adding acetone to improve MPG?

There is some ongoing 'research' on the effects of adding small quantities of acetone to the fuel to improve performance and MPG. Most users are reporting modest improvements. Supposedly, the acetone lessens the surface tension of the fuel, hence better atomization.

I'm trying this myself in my '01 Tahoe. The idle is very smooth, recently I recorded 19.5 mpg on a 160 mile trip. Filling up on the return trip to lower my acetone concentration, I lost about 2 mpg. However, there was heavy stop-go traffic that certainly spoiled that part of my test.

Your actual mileage may vary. Operators are standing by.

Just to recap (as 3SGTE is correct), no.. Acetone will not _simply_ increase mileage (is may somewhat clean the fuel system and increase octane), it WILL deteriorate the plastic and rubber components of the fuel system and it's been tested and shown NOT to increase mpg.

Again, as 3SGTW mentioned, this topic has been beat to death.

Negative. Does not work making the time spent a total loss and falls under Urban Legend as nothing but a complete waste of good money.

Might as well add a FuelMaster so you can get paid to pump your fuel.

Other Acetone mentions.

Car Talk.com -- It's bo-o-o-o-gus, Wil. With four "o's." Don't put acetone in your gas tank.
