Hostway/Valueweb Move - A Disaster..

I have been a Valueweb customer for about seven years or so. Affinity bought them a few years back and just recently Hostway bought them. I have a couple dedicated servers with them and recently got this email:

Dear Valued Customer:

Over the last month we have sent e-mails notifying you of an outage that you will experience with your Affinity dedicated server in order to facilitate a relocation of our datacenter.

The 12-15 hour outage will take place beginning this Friday July 27th at 8 PM EDT. The outage time will be incremental for customers. Therefore, if your server is taken off line at 8 PM EDT, you should expect your server to be back on line between 8 AM and 11 AM on Saturday July 28th. The estimated completion of the project is July 28th at 7 PM EDT. If your server is still not responding at this time, please call technical support at 888.846.xxxx.

If you would like to ensure the most graceful shut down of your server, you may log into your server before 8 PM on July 27th and perform a shut down.

We have planned to take every precaution to protect the hardware during this relocation but please ensure that all of your data on your dedicated server is backed up before the relocation begins. Should we need to replace any hardware on the servers, you will be responsible for loading your data onto the new hardware.
Anyway, here it is Sunday morning and I still have a server disconnected. I call up the support line to hear that I can wait on hold for the next available operator in approximately 3 hours 47 minutes to 6 hours 47 minutes. Then bumped to a recording that 1,600 servers are now online at 12am, the next message will be at 8am. Umm, well, ok, they all went home and went to bed I guess.

Anyway, they have left their unsupported support forum open and if you follow the thread you can see it go from "ho-hum are the servers back up yet" to a few pages later to "WTF it has been 36 hours!!"

»forum.valueweb.com/showthread.php?t=1344

What a major f*'up on their part. I guess it is finally time to leave this company. It sucks because they have reasonable prices and before they sold themselves out, they had decent support on the backend.

Valueweb has serious issues. Every time I've had to call their technical support, they always say "there are no known issues and it must be on your end". Yet, if I check the forum, others are complaining about the same things..

Server is still down. From what I read in the forum, most of the original VW tech staff is getting laid off..

I guess the Gate users are having similar issues. At least affinity is posting a progress report there:

»forum.gate.com/showthread.php?t=958

Currently we have 60% of all servers online. We are making every effort to bring all the remaining servers back online. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

Monday 1:07pm - all servers are still down, nothing is up yet, customer service has no clue what is wrong, no callbacks being received, new service center is supposed to contact me directly - been waiting over 3 hours for that call so far. It looks like many ValueWeb clients are jumping ship and moving to other providers, and the other providers are offering specials for all previous ValueWeb clients and fast server turn-ons, in minutes in some cases. This has been one huge disaster. We will be moving even if the servers come back up.

I know the story has been getting a bunch of diggs:

2 weeks before the outage, we talked to ValueWeb, and they committed to redirecting our servers, they checked over the info we sent them, and only after the fact, they said, "oh yeah. That was wrong. We couldn't really do the redirects on Friday."

When we called Valueweb, the tech support guy had the balls to say that we were the ONLY disgruntled customer complaining, that any outage was our fault because we didn't take care of it properly.

Unbelievable.

I have two servers with Valueweb, web and mail. The web server was up Sunday afternoon. It is now 10pm Monday and no mail server. I have about 100 clients, many doing eCommerce business.... with no mail today... they are pissed.. I AM PISSED!!

Here is a quote from the CEO of Hostway taken from their press release on the Valueweb acquisition.

"Our first and main focus through this acquisition has been to ensure that customers of both companies do not experience any disruption in current services and in fact bolster it further,” said Lucas Roh, CEO, Hostway"

BTW, I spent some time chatting with sales at rackforce.com tonight.. I believe I'm moving as quick as I can.

I went through the same ordeal with VW a few years back when they purchased SkyNetWeb (which is where my dedicated servers were housed in MD). They packed up the servers in MD and moved them to FL over a 36 hour period. Lots of headaches, upset customers, etc. I moved shortly afterwards to RackShack which became EV1, then The Planet. At least with those name changes my systems stayed on-line and in their org location, without interruption.

Same here - I am still offline Tuesday night. When and if they come back up, I am migrating elsewhere. Just unacceptable.

The first server that came back online is now intermittently out. Sometimes I can ping it, sometimes I cannot. IP's for sites don't appear to be working.. Frustrating to say the least..

I have two businesses on ValueWeb and the one based out of San Diego is fine but unfortunately, all my mail is out of Florida. It's now 5 days and I haven't been able to get any of my mail, so you can imagine how P*SSED I'm right now. I spoke to a rep yesterday who said I should hear back from them by Tuesday. I said today is Tuesday, he replied, "I meant next Tuesday." It's obvious they don't care about their customers!

Apparently some hosts are offering discounts for us.

»www.cari.net/ has a pretty good deal on a dual-xeon for 140/mo with free setup. Free monitoring too. (I actually have servers there and they're pretty solid.)

»www.serverbeach.com/ has 10% off their stuff. I think there's a coupon code on Digg.

Worth a look.
