Comcast Denver Speedtest - Approx 3AM (+/- 15m) 9-01-2009
I'm in South Denver, just a tad north of Englewood in some apartments near Hampden and Yosemite.

Tonight, I do believe I got the 16x2 upgrade as well. Was on 8x2 Performance Plus; Modem still shows 'Speedtier':

2009-08-31 23:16:00 6-Notice E102.0 SW Download INIT - Via Config file d11_m_sb5100_speedtier_c01.cm

Speeds on the other hand, are rather good:

wget http : //ubuntu.mirrors.tds.net / cdimage/dvd/20090829/karmic-dvd-amd64.iso
100%[=====================================>] 4,384,436,224 1.81M/s in 37m 46s

2009-09-01 03:03:47 (1.85 MB/s) - `karmic-dvd-amd64.iso' saved [4384436224/4384436224]

Still getting rathergood PowerBoost as well as shown in the speedtest above.

Today, Sep 8, 09, I was made aware of the fact that I am being charged for Blast 16Mbps by comcast. Since I normally do not see my electronic bill specifics, and since today I received a paper bill by mistake, I was PO. I have checked my U/D speeds with DSL reports for many years, with many different ISPs, and never have I had any speeds even close to 16 mbps. Even before this Blast effect, my speeds were in the 7-9 Mbps down, and at best 3 Mbps up.
To shorten this post, I would like to discuss this with anyone who could give me some correct information. Today, Comcast tried to tell me my router was the blame. After checking my speed without the router, I still did not even approach the speeds they are selling me. Comcast tells me my latency to my modem is only 13 ms, so I should have no trouble getting 16Mbps.

I would try a different speedtest, maybe speedtest.net

Comcast is full of crap... latency has nothing to do with speed... it has to do with, well... latency

If you log onto your modem »192.168.100.1, and browse around do you see anything about the config file?
Have you tried different PC's, or without the router?

That was one of the questions I had. Thanks for the modem login. I did try several different computers, with and without the router, which is a linksys WRT54GL. My modem is LinksysBEFCMU10. Will check out the config file. What should I be looking for specifically. My tweak test from DSL reports was great, according to them.

How can I tell if 16/2 or 12/2 is available?

Here is what I see on the website sales screen:

Performance PLUS
Downloads up to 16Mbps, uploads up to 2Mbps with PowerBoost®.

I've spoken with an online representative and was told that it looks like 12 Mb/s was available but when I called my local (???) office they said it's only 8 Mb/s but I don't know if she knew what she was talking about.

How can I tell for sure?

The 16 Mbps tier would be called Blast!. I have it here in NM, but the 12 Mbps "Performance" tier is still not available. The 3 we have are:
Performace: 6/1 $42
Performance PLUS: 8/2 $52
Blast!: 16/2 $62

I should also mention that even though we got Blast! it isn't a free upgrade from Performance PLUS.
Good luck getting what you want.... it took me 8 months, but still costs more.

edit: added the prices.

I have a Motorola Surfboard 5100, so my config file should read d11_m_sb5100_speedtierextreme_c01.cm

But my current config file is d11_m_sb5100_speedtier_c01.cm

A conversation with a Comcast employee "Yes, sometimes the boot file can be the cause but keep in mind-- boot file titles change from region to region."

I guess my question is, what should the boot file be for 16/1 Blast in the Atlanta area? Because according to her

a) Config files don't mean much and
b) "I assure you, speedtier is the correct bootfile. It's registering properly."

I just want to be sure everything is ok in my Modems settings before I blow 1/2 a day with a technitian at my house.

Here's the current info from my modem;

Software Version: SB5100-2.3.8.0-GA-00-NOSH
Hardware Version: 1
MIB Version: II
GUI Version: 1.0
VxWorks Version: 5.4

2009-09-28 15:02:03 6-Notice E112.0 SW download Successful - Via Config file

2009-09-28 15:01:42 6-Notice E102.0 SW Download INIT - Via Config file d11_m_sb5100_speedtier_c01.cm

Frequency 687000000 Hz Locked

Signal to Noise Ratio 34 dB

Power Level -10 dBmV

Channel ID 7

Frequency 36400000 Hz

Ranged Power Level 51 dBmV

With 5, 100+ meg downloads from dl.tv going. Netmeter says 700ish KiB/s max.

Re: Discuss 16/2 or 12/2 speed tiers here, please

I also have a SB 5100 and my config file reads Config file d11_m_sb5100_speedtierextreme2_c01.cm. I used to have the 8/2 tier and it was d11_m_sb5100_speedtier_c01.cm, so I think you need to make sure you actually have Blast! available to you, and that you aren't mistaking the powerboost "up to" numbers as the provisioned numbers. (Not accusing you)

I think you should get a tech out to your house anyway. The -10 dBmV power level and the 51 dBmV upstream power level are both very borderline.

1 last thing... I am pretty sure the speeds in all Blast! regions are now 16/2 instead of 16/1.

For those trying to confirm speed tier

From the first post in this topic:

quote:
How can I show confirmation I have the 16/2 or the 12/2 tier?

Since PowerBoost can make finding sustained speed impossible using the speed test sites, dadkins See Profile demonstrated how to find sustained download speed.

Show a screenshot of an actual download and then an upload of about 100 MB of a much larger file which demonstrates that you do have the new speeds, sustained and not just an initial burst like PowerBoost.

Inching our way towards 12/2

Fayetteville, GA - Suburb of Atlanta

My Arris TM402P now shows DOCSIS 2.0 as the Upstream Channel Type instead of DOCSIS 1.0, so that's progress. Sustained speeds are still 6/1, although upload Powerboost now is about 7 Mbps whereas it was about 2.5 before. Maybe by this time next year we'll have 12/2 speeds.... maybe.

16/2 and 12/2 Tiers Available in Augusta, GA

Click for full size
I live in Augusta, Georgia and yesterday I received a letter saying That Ultra and Extreme 50 will be available November 1st.

Just now my internet went down and not my tv. When the internet came back up the speeds on my modem had changed, so now 16/2 is in Augusta.

Me too a couple mornings ago. Downstream powerboost is still 15-16 Mbps for some reason(according to Comcasts's Naples speed test) but who cares about that.
