OK, I actually just talked to a Comcast Digital Media Outreach rep on the phone about Naples' seeming lack of upload speed increase. He said he took a look at my modem, noted the signal levels were good and the correct config file had been received. He mentioned that the modem was reporting that I should have the 6/1 cap, but I am still seeing 330-350k on speed tests and hitting a ceiling of about 40 KB/s in real-world uploads.

Not sure what is going on. I'm going to try upgrading my router (WRT54G) firmware, taking the router completely out of the loop, bypassing the amp in the attic, and doing some tests with other computers.

However, Cheese , if you are not seeing the upgrade either, then that suggests something larger is happening in this area.

The Comcast rep suggested I call him on Monday if I haven't been able to work it out, and he'd get in touch with some techs in the SWFL area to investigate.

I always hesitate to call them about such things, because I have a TiVo HD with two CableCARDs in it and it took forever to get the billing ironed out. Any time someone at Comcast touches my account, there's a risk they're gonna frag my CableCARDs (it's happened before) and I hate dealing with that.

Man, I used to play PC games online back in the good old days. Since I started working from home a few years ago, though, it became problematic to keep game stuff on my work rig, so I moved over to consoles. Mainly a 360 player now.

I just called Comcast and they want to charge me an extra $10.00 per month for the PowerBoost, albeit I have a TV package.

Is this the case with someone else? I don't mind paying the extra $10 if they do it all across the board.

The extra speed you are seeing on the speed tests are because of PowerBoost and because the speed test doesn't download/upload long enough to get past that to measure your sustained speed.

Actual speeds vary and are not guaranteed. PowerBoost only available with Comcast’s 6.0/8.0 speed plans and above. PowerBoost provides bursts of download speed above the customer’s provisioned download speed for the first 10 MB of a file. I've had 1MB uploads for over a year. You either have some kind of provisioning issue or an old outdated modem like the SB4000 series. Before, the 1MB upload was powerboost. Now its standard. Reboot your modem and see what config file is pushed out to you.

Andy's test was only a 9MB file, my powerboost uploads for the first 15MB or so at 250-275kb/s then drops off to 90kb/s.

I can name a few of reasons why PowerBoost is bad: speed test results are misleading, messes with iChat video chats, makes your entire internet connect slow down when uploading (ping time go through the roof!), etc.

I called Comcast to ask about the upgrade but it's $20 as I had read on line. I'm currently paying $39.95 for the 6 and it would be $59.95 for the 8/768. I asked in every way possible to make sure I was understanding her correctly. So if you're only paying $10 you're getting a good deal.

I'm back with my follow up. I was able to order the Motorola 5100 from Buy.com for $38 so I didn't even bother with Comcast. I called to give them the MAC address a week ago and he said it would take 5 to 7 days to get it connected. I checked with them yesterday and nothing had been done so the remarkably helpful guy took care of it right away. I stayed with the 6000/384 service and my most recent result was:

That's about the lowest I've seen - it's been as high as 18687/1886. When I used my web cam this morning, my husband said the image was much clearer.

Reports in this forum say upload powerboost is available on the Carmel NY system, but I am not getting any increase in speed (avg ~360). Tech who came to service my Cable TV told me he thought powerboost should be working (but he was a TV tech and wouldn't/couldn't test it); online tech said it was not in the area yet. Anyone know the scoop, and do I need to reset the modem to get it? Will all modems be able to benefit (mine is a Samsung PCX2600) or will I need an upgrade?

The short answer is that there is no normal when it comes to PowerBoost, up or down. You get what you get, both speed and duration, depending on where you are and when. I think it may also have something to do with cloud formations over dadkins ' house and what you had for breakfast, but don't quote me on that. ;)
