How do they draw this conclusion?

Quote: "According to law enforcement officials, the price of copper has been soaring, making it an ever-more attractive target for thieves who are typically trying to feed a drug addiction. Iron and other metals also have been going up in price, though not by as much, they say, and members of the drug culture have taken notice."

How do they draw the conclusion that people who steal copper are (generalyl) trying to get drugs? That seems like a fairly blanket statement with no proof. This upsets me.

Pretty much sums it up.... why else would someone chance jail time? Food, Clothing and Shelter are available by various organizations for those willing to accept the assistance. Why else would they need to steal?

God forbid we impune the motives of copper thieves...

I don't think its an unfair statement, and I certainly don't think it should upset anyone (except maybe thieves who lead a very healthy lifestyle )

I don't see a lot of single moms ripping copper off poles...

For starters they said "typically"...and I'm sure everyone else stealing copper is attempting to pay for someone else's college education or some other robin-hooded venture...

Whatever the reason, it would appear that they're taking something that doesn't belong to them and the thieves who were caught have typically....

Reasoning:

The bulk of people being arrested for stealing copper cable off high voltage lines and taking A/C compressors off roofs in the dark of night are either;

1: Known by local law enforcement as active drug users, either through previous arrests by that officer or their criminal history.

2: Typically in possession of drugs or drug paraphernalia at the time of their arrest.

Most people who's addiction is to the point of driving them to such extreme measures usually exhibit physical characteristics that are readily identifiable by persons who have dealt with addicts on a regular basis. I've dealt with more drug addicts in my career that I care to count (literally thousands) and they aren't hard to spot...

We already let them shorten their lives with cigarettes so drugs should be acceptable too. SSI is a mess, too many people living for too long.

I'm all for teens drinking too. They're more likely to wrap themselves around a tree late at night and taking a few friends out with them.

Sometimes that tree is another car or a pedestrian.

Re: How do they draw this conclusion?

It did happen here.

2 Teens in newer Nissan 350z sports car wiped out a husband and wife taking a stroll before being stopped in their tracks by a tree. All 4 died.

(07-24) 08:55 PDT SAN JOSE -- Four people died in San Jose Monday night when a teen driver lost control of his sports car, struck two pedestrians and then ran into two trees, police said today.

All four died at the scene of the crash on Graystone Lane.

Authorities said pedestrians Inder Paul Batra, 65, and his wife, Uma Batra, 57, were either walking or standing on the dirt shoulder of the road in Almaden Valley when they were struck at about 8:20 p.m. Driver Erik James Satterstrom, 19, and passenger Maxwell James Harding, 18, both of San Jose, also were killed, police said.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) report, "Substance Abuse and Treatment, State and Federal Prisoners, 1997," discusses alcohol and other drugs at length, and makes clear that both are strongly associated with crime. All told, 51 percent of offenders said they were under the influence of alcohol or other drugs at the time of their offense, and three-quarters of all inmates were characterized by researchers as being "alcohol- or drug-involved."

It is true. here in kansas city we are in the middle of the meth lab epidemic. meth cooks are ususally middle-aged white trash male with no teeth.

After these pieces of crap stripped the wiring off of 10 of my semi trailers, I built a cage around my a/c units. Let them try now.

Scrappers will come by and "ask" for any throwaway stuff, but they are really scoping the place out to come back later that night and steal whatever they want.
