Hold the recylers responsible.

Geee some guy comes in with 1000 feet of 500 pair copper. Don't they even wonder a little bit where it came from? At most I see the copper thief burning the insulation off of the copper but they still know what it is. I doubt they are taking the copper in in a neatly melted down block.

Re: Hold the recylers responsible.

Yep. They should require valid DL/Photo ID, which would be recorded, before they buy anything.

Re: Hold the recylers responsible.

Agreed, in principle.

However, until they're forced to immediately validate a DL or other photo ID through the state or company from which it was issued, we'll start seeing an increase of fake identities being used at these places - if it's not already happening - wouldn't be surprised.

And then the police show up at some poor schlub's door accusing them of copper theft. Won't that be fun!

That was preposterous! Utter Nonsense! Totally unsupportable drivel! You can't be serious!....Um, what did you say?

A lot of the recyclers are a bit shady too. I was reading about a sting in I think the Los Angeles or Phoenix area where they put a bunch of them out of business for doing stolen milk crates (plastic has a lot of value too). Copper is harder to trace since it is not labeled.

Here in Dayton they have put more responsibility on the scrap yards. If you bring in things other than aluminum cans, they take your ID. I had collected various odds and ends of scrap metal including lead water pipe and even a 12' piece of 1/4" copper tubing. Small amounts, mind you, but they took down my license plate #, copied my driver's license, and so on. I didn't care, but clearly the stuff I brought in shouldn't have raised any eyebrows. When a homeless-looking person shows up with a shopping cart full of aluminum siding, THAT should throw up a red flag (true story: people were ripping aluminum siding off of houses).

Hell, my wife caught a truckload of guys ripping downspouts off of garages in our alley. She told them "I'm calling the cops" and they took off ... to the scrapyard ... where the police were already waiting.

Now, the best one: Another location of my employer here in town is an alloy foundry, pouring castings out of "high alloys". An employee (former) was showing up at the scrap yards with 5-gallon buckets of nickel pellets. WHERE does the average person get this ?? THEY DON'T. They did report the purchases, but after the fact. I don't understand why don't just refuse to buy the stuff. Then again, someone will and the guy will get his cash.

They got your down spouts also Hall? They got mine and several of my neighbors. People need to get a job and a life and stop ripping people off.

Re: Hold the recylers responsible.

No, they got the neighbors two houses up and had their hands on the immediate neighbors when my wife heard the racket... Ask her about it.

Ironically, the garage they did get them off of just got renovated and they put new downspouts on the garage. I feel like telling the guy he needs to add multiple clamps instead of the typical 1 or 2.

these kinds of people will also steal the freon tubing off your HVAC systems if you have an upstairs unit and tubes going up the outside of the house. heck they are probally bold enough to try and steal it while the unit is running(though the 350psi high side would give a surprise to Mr. Hacksaw with some liquid freon)

Yea.. you're right.. and car thieves don't chop up the cars they sell either.

The thief may get $3 a pound for the copper, but the next guy up the chain is getting even more.. think they really care?
