harley3K, you can get a 10% discount from Circuit City through their recent email (assuming that you received it). My previous post was all messed up. NOCMan in Flower Mound made the switch and said that he DID get the Motorola card vs. the SciAt card. |

| reply to JeepMatt Thanks all for the Circuit City 10% discount tip. I'll have to look for that discount.
And hey I just thought of another great feature of having Tivo versus Fios-DVR: (Hopefully) when I am viewing a recorded show late at night, it won't be interrupted with a blarringly loud and obnoxious Emergency Broadcast System Test!!!
Does anyone know how Tivo behaves when these tests go off? I was just watching a recording of Bill Maher on Larry King and the volume on the channel was quite low so I had my volume cranked up enough that I'm pretty sure I woke up my neighbors when the Emergency Broadcast System test blaired through my surround sound. So very annoying...

2 edits | I don't have a TiVo, but I was researching the Series 3 with the posts I've seen here.
I found on TiVo.com where some people are reporting that the Series 3, while recording, will pick up an alert but then will not resume recording when the EBS ends. It will also pick up an EBS alert if you are watching a recording.
I'm sure people will chime in that actually has experience with the Series 3. I don't mind the EBS alerts, it could save my family's bacon one day, but it would be nice if it would at least resume any recording in progress once the alert is finished. |

Amazon.com has it (on August 25th at least) for $285.81, and the wireless USB network adapter for 37.41, and no sales tax, so I guess I could wait a little bit.

I've had the test interrupt recordings a few times, but I don't record a lot at the late hour they do they tests, but I am almost always watching something recorded at that time.

I don't make it a regular habit to put the box in standby, but I do when I am out of town for a weekend. |

| reply to mikefischer99 Okay, I am responding to a number of posts in the thread, but I am too lazy to reference them all.
To the guy who just recently bought his hd tivo and wireless card and talking about amazon unbox, be aware that you cannot just select a movie and start to watch it, it has to download it first, and over the wireless network, it can take some time, so prepare ahead of time (say the night before when selecting movies). Additionally they will delete themselves after 2 weeks if you do not watch it, ot 72 hours after you first hit the play button on it (I think its 72 hours...)
To the others talking about hacking their tivos with lrger drives, don't bother, it voids your warrenty, and the esata port on the back has been enabled, so you can purchase a large esata disk array and have all the storage you want without opening and voiding your warranty. The downside is that once you connect the esata array, it gets married to the tivo, and you cannot use it elsewhere (no other tivo), and if you want to attach it to your computers, you will need to format it.
I have one of the original $800 ones (curse them for releasing a cheaper one 3 months later on me...). I also have 3 very hacked directv series 2 tivo's, which although I do not have directv anymore, I can still use them as media storage devices. A update in the near future will enable tivo to go on the series 3 boxes, however, this will exclude all hd content, additionally you can run the tivo desktop software, and store content on your pc (video, audio, pictures etc) and stream them directly to any tivo to go enabled devices, including watching any programming on any of the older tivo's.
I personally, could care less about VOD, I had directv before, never had it, don't care about it. I do have a normal STB in the bedroom on my tiny ass TV if I want to watch something on vod, but otherwise, the loss of that function for the gains of what tivo provides... is negligible.
Eh.. thats it for now heh... |

Unless something has changed in the last 24 hours that is not true for the TivoHD (which is what we are talking about in this thread). The eSata port is not yet enabled in software, Kickstart 62 does not work.
I don't see how swapping hard drive would void your warranty, if something happened such that you needed service you would place the original hard drive back. |

NOCMan Verizon Fios User Premium join:2004-09-30 Flower Mound, TX | I usually just wait until the warranty expires.. 90 days I think. Course we do not record much HD and just let suggestions and Sp's take care of what we want to watch.
Still esata will be enabled by the time the new drive is released. |

| reply to mikefischer99 I apologize for asking a similar question a few months ago and potentially hijacking this thread, but I was hoping that maybe one of the folks switching to TIVO from the FIOS DVR has come up with a solution.
I currently have COMCAST analog service and a Series 2 DVR. I can watch anything recorded on the TIVO from any room in the house because I have the AVCAST media kit which allows me to control and watch my TIVO from any of my tvs by switching them to a designated channel and using remote IR blasters.
I have FIOS for broadband but have been hesitant to switch my TV's because I like TIVO and the multi-room functionality. I see my choices as follows if I switch to FIOS:
1) Get the multi-room DVR which does multi-room viewing better than my current setup. 2) Keep my series II or get an HD TIVO, but give up my multi-room options. 3) Use two DVR's, perhaps one FIOS and one TIVO. 4) Setup some other system to broadcast the TIVO output to the other tv's. Does anyone use such a setup with FIOS and TIVO?
I am hoping that someone has worked out a solution for number 4. Any ideas? |

I have never opened a Tivo Series3, but IIRC, that model may have a warranty sticker you must remove before you can replace the hard drive.
The TivoHD has no such sticker. There is nothing to indicate to Tivo that you have upgraded the hard drive on the TivoHD, provided you keep the original drive and reinstall it should you require warranty service.
It is very easy to upgrade the internal drive with the WinMFS utility. Upgrading no longer requires you to boot into Linux or type in any special commands. You open the case and remove the drive using a torx screwdriver, connect it to your Windows XP or Windows Vista PC (do not use Windows 2000 or Windows 98/Me), run the WinMFS utility, and and click the 'backup' menu. Then you turn off your computer, disconnect the original drive and connect your new high-capacity drive, turn on your computer, and click the 'restore' menu in the WinMFS app. Not rocket science, folks.
If you don't want to open your PC to connect the drive to the SATA connector on your motherboard, you can get a cheap SATA->USB enclosure and perform the backup and upgrade with that.
The most difficult part of the upgrade is finding a screwdriver of right length that will actually fit the screws on the TivoHD. Above I mentioned such a part from Advance Auto Parts.

This is not correct. TivoToGo (Tivo-to-PC transfers) will support high-definition content. Tivo told TivoHD reviewers that last month. However, it is unknown whether high-definition TivoToGo be limited to local and other "copy freely" flagged channels, or will it also support cable channels marked as "copy one generation" without any downressing.
One of the differences between the TivoHD and the Series3 is that the TivoHD includes built-in hardware to downconvert HD channels to SD (on the fly) for transfer to a PC. The Series3 can transfer SD, HD, but has no hardware to downconvert HD to SD, so if Tivo wanted to support that with the Series3, they would have to do it with the Mac/PC software.

That's will allow you to watch all your recordings on every Tivo, regardless of the box on which they were recorded.
Since multi-room is important to you, you may want to use the Verizon MRV DVR for now and wait until Tivo releases the software update for the TivoHD with MRV.
I don't know of any affordable way to broadcast high-definition from the TivoHD around your home. You could use your existing AVCAST media kit with the TivoHD, but obviously you wouldn't get HD quality except on the TV where it is directly connected. If you have just one HDTV, you could connect the TivoHD to that and use the AVCAST media kit to serve the other TVs in your home. |

At the moment I don't have a single high-def tv, although am probably going to be getting one shortly. I would be happy to hook the HD Tivo to my high def tv and broadcast to the other tv's in SD. That would work for me. Unfortunately, I don't think the AVCAST system will work with FIOS. It broadcasts the TIVO and IR blaster signals over analog channels 75-80 on my cable lines. I don't think this sytsem will work with the digital FIOS signal, but I might be wrong about that. |

Okay, I just spent some time thoroughly reading the Tivo Community website - and read up on all of the pixellation problems that Tivo HD users are seeing.
I ordered mine from Circuit City - but still didn't pick it up (as you have 14 days - and VZ isn't set to come out until next Monday) - but now i'm not so sure I want one - as most users are complaining of pixellation.
And well, with all of the pixellation i've been dealing with from FIOS out of Philly - I sure as hell don't want to be walking into even more of it!
I think I'll cancel the "pick-up order" and wait things out until they stabilize.
Any thoughts?? Ken, I know you said you "do" experience it - but I don't think i'll be able to put up with it. I've been macro-blocked to death already. -- "ONE team - ONE city - ONE dream!!" |

In fact, because the TiVo can output native resolution - it looks better than the 3416 on my setup. The Series3 Lite "TiVo HD" may use different components that do not make use of the signal as well as the Series3. I don't know. But as far as this similar device, I have had 0 problems. |
