Quite a few of us use it for various reasons. I've used it for testing purposes on a few occasions. -- Team Discovery

| OK, just as an example I had an extension that polled the site to see if there was an update for the updates sticky. I was unaware until I saw my name on the buddy bar that it was actually showing me as here when I wasn't. Or other times when I've had connection problems or the site has had a problem. My nic popping up on the bar let me know there was at least a connection even if the page didn't load. -- Team Discovery

| those are very specific reasons to do with your extension.
really I don't like user-written extensions that "poll". You have no idea how wasteful it is to re-generate a page every minute or whatever, for eternity. There is a firefox addon that does new topic notifications properly in a light-weight manner, thats the only approved way to access that info continuously. |

| I had it set for every 30 minutes only during the night I hosted - no other time. I'd catch a couple of hours sleep, glance at the screen by my bed and if no updates go right back to sleep. If you have the name of that topic notifier that does that - especially if it doesn't show me as online I'd love to try it. I'd still like to have myself as a Buddy, though for the other reasons. -- Team Discovery

The link to install the firefox notifier extension is listed at the top right of the home page if it isn't already active. |

| Ah, you're referring to the dslr notifier, which I have already - I need something that let's me know when a specific thread - the updates sticky has updates to it when I'm hosting.
As to the "other" it's handy when I'm having connection problems or if the site is kind of wonky to tell if I'm actually connected here or not. -- Team Discovery

justin Australian join:1999-05-28 Brooklyn, NY | if you get a page and the timestamp in the bottom left is correct then you're connected.
Why can't you set topic notifications on a specific thread, by IM or by email? |

I'll leave mers2 to answer that, but another thing we tried in setting up this system for her use was using the RSS feed. In Firefox each page appears to have its own RSS feed code -- the link appears at the far right end of the address bar. But when trying to use it, I believe the actual feed resolves to the front page? or the full updated followed list? (Sorry, I wasn't the one to test that, mers2 can tell you the specifics.)
Is there some way to get an RSS update on a particular thread? and if not, why does Firefox appear to offer that option? -- Get your daily dose of wonder from the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD).

| reply to MorWired I've been meaning to do a poll on the subject for a long time: are you your own buddy, and if so why? I didn't know you could do that.
It actually makes sense if you don't want to put others on watch, yet you want the ability to see who is watching you. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 2200 modem/router; SuSE 10.1; firefox 2.0.0.5 |

| reply to justin said by justin :if you get a page and the timestamp in the bottom left is correct then you're connected. Why can't you set topic notifications on a specific thread, by IM or by email? Doesn't the time stamp on the bottom left stay the same if you don't refresh the page - even if you are shown as online? My problem was I would not have known I was online here if I hadn't glanced at the screen after it showed me an update had arrived by a blue arrow for the extension if I hadn't seen my nick appear at the top of the screen. I was unaware the extension would do that - I assumed it was like dslr notifier.
For some reason when I've checked IM notification in the past it started giving me IM notification for all threads. Perhaps that has changed. I'll try it this week. -- Team Discovery

| reply to justin Sorry for another post - but I want to make clear I'm not talking a bout a page refresh. It was a 3rd party extension that lit up a blue arrow in the sys tray if there was an update to a specific thread. In this case the updates thread in the Security forum that I host on a specific day. -- Team Discovery

| this sounds increasingly convoluted and off topic. But it also sounds exactly what topic notifications are for (by IM or by Email). If they are not comprehensive enough then think out what you do need, and raise a request, instead of writing third party extensions that rely on weird stuff - because the request, and any solution if it can be made, may be of general use.
And until then, it seems like you can still use whatever complex thing you had setup because it doesn't rely on you being a buddy to yourself anyway. |

I raised the issue only because it gave an example of what I used having myself as a Buddy for - it has shown me when I appear on line when either I shouldn't or have had connection problems. -- Team Discovery

and rolling over a buddy's name does not produce a message. I've screen shots of it, but it doesn't work for me. -- Iraq Coalition Deaths | bobrk |
