pop.att.yahoo.com Mail sloooooooow

My mail server is pop.att.yahoo.com

I have been experiencing very sluggish mail downloads for a couple of weeks or more. Often cannot get anything to connect.

Is anyone else seeing this, or is there a better server to use?

Thanks
Bob

Yes, it has been slow the past couple of days during the day here in Napa...they must be rebalancing the system...of course they dont feel the need to notify anyone...

Me too, that is in San Francisco. Extremely slow or I get "connection to the server failed or dropped" and "cannot find the server" messages. I seem to notice the slowness more often since their required "security enhancement" settings change in April.

Email is totally out here in the San Diego area; "Your POP server has not responded in 60 seconds". It began a few hours ago.

ATT Internet has had problems in Calif. for over 24 hrs. Some websites will not load, including Yahoo (AT&T's email service). I can get access via Charter.

A call to AT&T today resulted in recording saying that users in the '805' area 'may have internet problems' unit 'noon'. Well, 9 hours later, still no Yahoo access (or DSL Reports - Using Charter to get online).

No word as to why? Perhaps it's related to data-mining overload in SFO.

Various email problems are being reported in the Southwest and Midwest forums as well so it isn't confined to the SFO area.

Thanks for the status report. My email has been sporadic most of the evening.

For what it is worth, I found this message in the SBC Email newsgroup:

Disabling SSL on both smtp.att.yahoo.com and pop.att.yahoo.com incoming
brings speeds back to normal, watch that your ports are also get
changed back to 25 for outgoing and 110 for incoming.

I'll try going back to SSL everyday until they are fixed.

I changed to the non-SSL ports and can now get email.

Thanks. Also interesting as ATT made it sound like mail would be inaccessible without going through SSL.

I just switched to ATT from another ISP a couple of weeks ago and I thought the same about using SSL. I have never used SSL before for email (I use it with my newsserver though) even during a previous stint using PacBell. As you said, they only give the information for using SSL which gives the impression that SSL is the only way email will work. I am now wondering why they want us to use SSL? Not that I am the suspicious type but ATT doesn't have a good reputation for customer support and service.

You need SSL email for security when you are traveling and accessing your email account across a networked owned by some other provider. This conversion to SSL email access goes hand-in-hand with the new free wifi access and their iPhone sales which can use wifi connections. Frankly, AT&T should have had SSL email access when they first offered wifi, but better late than never.

If you only access your email from your home DSL connection, then you really don't need the SSL protection.

Thanks!

Getting rid of SSL does improve the email!

Thanks to all who reported.

How sure are you about this? I'd like to turn off SSL but don't want to run into nasty problems (i.e. not being able to receive or send email, and not being aware of it for days or weeks).

I don't have any inside knowledge about when or if Yahoo plans to discontinue the old 25/110 servers. They work now, but might not in the future.

Some people have just switched back to the old servers when these email problems started and the email works on the old servers, but there are also reports here at DSLR that indicate that the old servers are also having their share of access problems so this isn't something restricted to the new servers.

As I indicated earlier I couldn't even get onto the SSL server at all. So switching to the old (non-SSL) servers have at least gotten me on. I will wait to hear if/when the SSL server is back on line and also try the SSL settings every once in a while to see if they are up again. It would really be nice if ATT could let us know (not by email!) when the problem has been fixed. Tech support can't help. I once played with them for four days of no connection to the internet only to find that the whole area had been out; but tech support didn't know about it. And I don't know of any "status page" that would let me know about problems. The only one I found says that email is working normally. So it is up to the individual to fight his own battles.

I suspect that these problems are caused by Yahoo and not AT&T. Of course, AT&T is responsible because they chose Yahoo as a partner to manage the email service and apparently renewed the partnership this past spring.

For anyone that cares my SSL email is up again. And it seems like it is working more quickly than it did before it went down. Perhaps ATT/Yahoo has fixed the problem.

Not mine (in SF). SSL still timing out, but the old settings seem to be working well for now.
